College Prowler Take

As a whole, most of the dorms on Emory’s campus are nice but not too special. Each dorm has its differences from the next, and some are better than others in terms of location, etc. Of the freshmen dorms, Dobbs is the most centrally located, Complex is the closest to the library, New Turman and McTyeire are the closest to the DUC, and Few and Evans are closest to McDonough Field. Complex is made up of three dorms, one of which is all-female. Overall, students would agree that Emory’s newest freshmen forms, New Turman and Few/Evans, are by far the best quality buildings. In fact, one could liken them to a hotel rather than a dormitory.

Incoming freshmen can specify which type they would like to live in (coed by room, coed by floor, coed by hall, etc.). To get into New Turman or Few/Evans, students must write an essay to participate in the programs that each building is associated with (New Turman’s is called Citizenship, while Few/Evans have a sustainability program called Living Green). Each floor has two Sophomore Advisors and a Resident Advisor who are there to help you out and get you in trouble at the same time. Every dorm has a Residence Hall Director, but this person is rarely seen unless you misbehave. Emory is also in the process of creating a “Freshmen Village”, a grouping of new dorms that will allow incoming freshmen to all live together in close proximity to each other. For the most part, Emory’s dorms are standard, although the new buildings are really outstanding.

The new freshman dorms are...

The new freshman dorms are beautiful. Few, Evans, and New Turman are your best options as far as looks, amenities, and location. As far as old freshmen dorms go, avoid Dobbs, which has tiny rooms, and Harris, which is really dark. Trimble and McTeiyre are also small but have good locations, and Complex (Thomas, Hopkins, and Smith) is far away from the others but has big rooms with lots of storage space. Upperclass housing is all pretty good (except for the Old Turman Buildings), but it's not guaranteed after sophomore year.

Try and apply for Few, Evans, and New Turman since they are the newest and have the largest rooms. Complex and Harris are not bad places to live, they are just large and somewhat un-unified. Avoid Dobbs.

The freshmen dorms are steadily improving as new dorms are being built. The new dorms are fantastic and environmentally friendly as well! As for upperclassmen housing, the Clairmont Residential Campus is beautiful--its nickname is "the country club." After sophomore year, though, you aren't guaranteed housing. Regardless, many upperclassmen decide to move into off-campus apartments, and there are countless options for that!

Right now, Emory is spending...

Right now, Emory is spending significant amounts of money in revamping its housing situation. 2008 saw the introduction of two great freshmen dorms. These new dorms are to be followed with an entire freshman dorm complex over the next two years. Also, the Clairmont campus, usually reserved for upperclassmen, has been opened to sophomores and above. Often described as a resort on campus, the Clairmont housing complex is beautiful and well-equipped. Many of the older dorms on campus have been torn down in recent years and are in the process of being replaced, though many buildings such as the Clifton Towers are still relics of the past.

The dorms are great if you can get one of the new dorms. Definitely avoid Dobbs and some of McTrymble, but the rest of the dorms are OK. Few and Evans are the best because they were built most recently and are basically brand new. New Turman is also only two years old.
