Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As you walk around Emory’s campus, it is not hard to notice the wide variety of skin tones that pepper the landscape. Unfortunately for the students, Emory’s ethnicity numbers do not accurately reflect the amount of intermingling that occurs. Most white students hang out together, as do most black and most Asian students. One reason could be that the Greek community usually hovers around 85% white. Nonetheless, most everyone appreciates the diversity of the campus. The amazing diversity of metropolitan Atlanta gives one’s entire experience at Emory a feel of the diverse. It should also be noted that the population of Jewish students is around 35% within the white community. A large and noticeable portion of the population hails from the Northeast, causing some to call Emory “a bastion of the North.”

Some students joke about Emory’s seemingly constant push for more racial diversity, because of the overall lack of economic diversity that exists here. Most students are from fairly wealthy backgrounds and have access to the finer things in life. The lack of economic diversity combined with the lack of mixing between the races drastically affects Emory’s true level of diversity. One could go to Emory for four years without ever really speaking to someone outside of their socioeconomic class or race, and that is a problem. However, Emory’s persistence in promoting diversity on campus should be applauded, and does provide a colorful and educational experience.

Enough, but Not Enough

Although there are people from many ethnicities to embrace all cultures, the groups seem to isolate themselves therefore increasing the polarity between the various ethnic groups which can be seen in a negative way.

Diversity on Campus

There is a lot of diversity around campus, but the different groups tend to stay separated.

Fairly Diverse

Emory University has a decent amount of diversity. We have many International students from Asia, but also many from different African countries, as well as South America. Also, considering we are in Atlanta, you would expect more African Americans, but relative to the University, there is a decent number. Also, we have tons and tons of Jewish people. In all honestly, it seems that everyone is accepted much more now than in past years, and there are not really any challenges when it comes to race.

Facts

Gay Pride

This campus is very accepting of gay students and teachers alike. There are safe zones for gay students, and also clubs, as well as the Office of Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Life.

Political Activity

Emory is primarily a politically and socially liberal school. There were numerous well-attended protests during the recent Middle East action, and there have been other various liberal protests here before as well. There are Young Republicans and Young Democrat clubs, but they are not especially vocal. Don't think that it is one-sided, however, as Emory students are known for some staunch political debates (they just happen to be in private).

Economic Status

Emory is very expensive, and most students do not have any trouble paying their tuition. There is diversity within the economic backgrounds of students, but not nearly enough to stop students from complaining about “the rich kids.” It is never shocking to see five straight luxury cars drive past with students behind the wheel.

Most Common Religions

There are a lot of Jewish people at Emory, so there are also a lot of Jewish groups. The Jewish portion of Emory’s students are very vocal, so much so that people outside of Emory joke that Emory, a Methodist school by nature, stands for Early Methodist, Only Recently Yiddish.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Emory’s minority clubs are not especially vocal, as they tend to keep to themselves and have gained reputations for being self-exclusionary. There are numerous African American, Asian, Indian, and Latino clubs that sponsor various events around campus constantly. There are two black fraternities and three sororities, one historically Jewish fraternity and two sororities.
