College Prowler Take
Ten years ago at Emory, Greek life clearly dominated the social scene. That line has certainly been blurred recently, and for the better. Nonetheless, Greek life is still a very dominant force on campus. It is Greeks who most attend parties, who most go out at night, and who also make up around thirty percent of the student body. There are many nationally recognized fraternities and sororities on campus, and Fraternity Row is a popular destination for anyone on campus on a Friday or Saturday night. There is a strong group of people not in fraternities who also go out regularly, and the groups mix relatively well. There is also a strong group that opposes Greek life, though not very actively. Rush is a very hectic time, especially for freshmen girls, while pledging can be hectic for the guys. The parties on campus have gotten worse and worse over the years here. The image of Emory as a party school must have irked the administration; the school has cracked down hard on parties since the mid-nineties. Kegs were banned around 1996, and the school now operates on a bring-your-own-beer, six-beers-per-person limit. This crackdown is also partially due to noise complaints from the nearby Druid Hills neighborhood. In this case, it’s unfortunate that the Emory administration has catered to its neighbors rather than its students, and now parties do not feature the late-night bass bumping that they used to. This is not to say that there is no fun to be had on campus, but it IS to say that no student will experience the Hollywood version of a college kegger here.

Emory has cracked down hard on...
Emory has cracked down hard on Greek life recently. The new GLA points system limits how many parties a fraternity can throw per semester, the Row is now off limits to freshmen until after fall break, and a couple of fraternities have been kicked off campus. There are so many rules that have to be followed now that throwing an on-campus party is no longer fun—it's just a huge liability. You can't have music after 2 a.m., there's no liquor allowed at all, and if any freshman gets in trouble for drinking and says what house they were at, that fraternity gets in trouble. Rush is 100 percent dry, and Emory actually called the cops when it got word of an APES rush event off campus this year. I would seriously reconsider before you pledge a fraternity at Emory now.

Greek life dominates the social scene. That doesn’t mean you can’t do your own thing. The Greek student body tends to become fragmented by house, and brothers or sisters stick with their own. It’s really up to the individual to recognize his or her own unique interests and most comfortable niche. Many students choose to join the Greek system, the second largest in the country, but you don’t necessarily have to be a member to be social. |

For about the first two years of college, Greek life dominates the social scene. That is, of course, until students become of age when they typically explore the local Collegetown bar scene for the next two years. |

About 1/3 of students are Greek, but each of the houses has its own niche. I didn’t go Greek, but I have had no problems going to their events, or being friends with those who are in the system. |

The Greek life is big. It does not completely dominate the social scene, but it has a large impact. Lots of freshmen go to frat parties to have a good time. There are also lots of fun parties at houses in Collegetown. |

Did You Know?Sororities on campus only have lodges in which some of their members live. Although a rumor exists that this is because of a Georgia law prohibiting more than four women from living in the same house, it is untrue.
