College Prowler Take
Luckily for students, Atlanta is a fun city, and people at Emory need to party, so they figure out ways to do it. With the dwindling party scene on campus comes the now-rampant club promoting game, that gives students looking to go crazy an outlet. Most Emory students that do party, including nearly all of Greek life, go out on Thursday nights to various clubs promoted by other students in either Buckhead or Midtown. Tuesday is also a big night, with many students venturing out to different areas of Atlanta for fun. Nearly every night of the week is a good one for Maggie’s Bar and Grill, about a five-minute cab ride from campus—a poorly lit and stuffy bar known for letting anyone and everyone in. On weekends, Buckhead and Midtown are great places to go, with some clubs in Buckhead offering free admission and relaxed dress codes, while others can cost up to $20 and require dressy attire. Midtown is mainly dressy and almost every club charges to get in. Either place is great for a long night, but be advised that almost nowhere in Atlanta is 18-and-up, which means that it’s a very exciting city to go to college in, and a tremendous place to party—but only if you’re 21. If not, you’ll be limited to fraternity and house parties for fun, which isn’t all that bad.

I go to Buckhead sometimes, but it can get very expensive if you are not careful. Most places charge $10 to get in, and drinks can get pricey too. I have woken up many mornings with an empty wallet. |

Atlanta is such a young city...
Atlanta is such a young city overall that you can find people around your age almost anywhere you go. Buckhead is about a fifteen-minute drive from campus, and it is a huge club and bar district. Midtown is fifteen or twenty minutes, and it is packed with lounges and hip clubs. The Highlands is only about ten minutes away, and it has a lot of cool bars close enough to walk from place to place. |

If you don’t have a fake ID, get one immediately. Most clubs separate the 18- and 21-year-olds in order to keep younger kids from drinking. I would get a good fake too, as lots of places will take your ID if it sucks. And don’t try to fake a Georgia license, either. Unfortunately for the younger crowd, Atlanta recently changed a lot of its clubs from 18-and-up to 21-and-up only. Still, this is a great time to be down here because ATL is such an up-and-coming city. |

Atlanta has amazing nightlife, and it’s a good thing too, because if it didn’t I wouldn’t have stayed here for so long. The city of Atlanta is the perfect outlet to escape the Emory bubble. |

If you want to, there is something fun to do every night of the week in Atlanta. Mondays are good nights for karaoke, Tuesdays are prime nights at certain clubs, Wednesdays are hot also, and of course Thursday through Saturday is always a party. |
FactsClub Crawler
The best places to find clubs in Atlanta are in Buckhead and in Midtown. Buckhead is a nice mixture of about twenty-five bars and clubs, from dress-down to dress code, all with their own certain charm and nuances. Midtown has mainly swanky clubs with some bars, but everything there is a little dressier than in Buckhead. Both places are 21-and-up only. Last call everywhere is 2:30 a.m. and nearly every bar closes at 3 a.m.
Bar Prowler
There are some great areas for bars in Atlanta, including Buckhead, Virginia Highlands, East Atlanta, Little Five Points, and Midtown. Bars here range from hip and crazy to calm and full of yuppies, but most are a good time.
Club Listings
One of Atlanta’s trendiest and hippest clubs, Lava Lounge has all you could ask for: good music, great atmosphere, and beautiful people. With vibrant dance floors and relaxing lounges, Lava Lounge is definitely worth checking out.
This underground club focuses on dancing, with an eclectic musical styling that includes everything from punk rock to House/R&B. Known for being the alternative, diverse, unpretentious club of Atlanta, there’s no need to dress it up or be afraid to let go and really dance!
Formerly Eleven50, Opera is one of the most exclusive clubs in Atlanta. Expect to see impressively dressed dancers and great sound/light shows as well as celebrity performers.
This club plays salsa music and Top 40 and caters to an older crowd, though many Emory students will promote parties here throughout the year. This is a very fun place to dance, and you can buy cigars here, too. Havana Club 247 Buckhead Ave. NE Buckhead (404) 869-8484
Home to Blondie, a stripper famous for crushing a beer can in her breasts, this strip club/nightclub is a popular and funky dancing place on Saturday nights. Expect to be shocked here.
Elegant and trendy, Compound is made up of several structures connected by a center courtyard and pool. Each section has a different atmosphere: a relaxing lounge with artwork and music, a large dance club with intricate light shows, and a special events area.
Formerly Paradox, this is a very popular club with students from other Atlanta schools, but Emory throws some great parties there, too. Frequency has a nice deck with a beautiful view of Atlanta.
Bar Listings
A huge sports bar nestled in a strip mall near school, Famous is a great place to spend a football Sunday or a weekend night for their cheap drinks and good food. Don’t try your fake ID here, though; they can always spot an Emory youngster. Famous 2947 North Druid Hills Rd. (404) 633-3555
Basically Famous’s neighbor, Maggie’s attracts an all-Emory crowd almost any night of the week, and treats the youngsters well, too. This very small bar is often so crowded that it gets hard to move, but people keep flocking back every night. This is a great place to find cheap drinks and cheap college students, which mix perfectly together. Maggie’s Bar and Grill 2937 North Druid Hills (404) 636-5300
LuLu’s is known for their $1 drinks for girls on Tuesdays, their enormous upstairs with great views in all directions, and most importantly, their fishbowls. These plastic fishbowls are filled with grain alcohol and punch, served on the rocks, with as many straws as you have friends to help you drink one. LuLu’s 2057 Peachtree Rd. NE (404) 262-5220
Neighbor’s is usually filled with yuppies, but there is also almost always an Emory section, too. This bar in the Highlands has a huge deck, which is wonderful on nice spring and summer nights, and is within walking distance of numerous other bars. Neighbor’s 752 N. Highland Ave. NE (404) 872-5440
What to Do if You're Not 21
While Emory used to offer underage club nights on Thursdays, the Atlanta City Council recently passed an ordinance that prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from going to clubs. Unfortunately, this limits the choices for underagers to frat parties, or fake IDs.
Did You Know? The Clermont Lounge is often frequented by celebrities; an episode of Comedy Central’s Insomniac with Dave Attel was filmed there.
