Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you’re willing to invest the time and money necessary, eating around Atlanta is truly a joy. The Village, just a 15-minute walk from any dorm on campus, has a couple of good places, including Everybody’s, a tasty Italian restaurant, and Doc Chey’s, a quality chain Chinese eatery. Out around Atlanta, there are tons of great places to eat, ranging from inexpensive to gourmet. There are some of the best steakhouses in the country here, tons of great sushi places, and great ethnic eateries as well. A group called Buckhead Life owns and operates several of Atlanta’s best restaurants, all situated in and around Buckhead, an area with many good but expensive restaurants about ten minutes from Emory by car. As a freshman, these places can be hard to get to since nearly every freshman is without a car.

For less money, there are many great restaurants scattered around town in places like the Virginia Highlands (Dish, Osteria, Murphy’s), Little Five Points (Vortex and Savage Pizza), and Ponce de Leon Avenue. Closer to Emory, there are the usual fast-food chains, a Steak 'n Shake, the popular frozen yogurt chain Yoforia, and a pretty good Mexican restaurant called Los Loros. Getting off campus to enjoy all of the great eateries that Atlanta has to offer will not disappoint. Atlanta has established itself as one of the best cities in the country to get a bite to eat.

Escaping the Emory Bubble

Emory University students, underclassmen especially, live and breathe within the so-called Emory Bubble when it comes to dining. However, Atlanta is a vibrant city in which widely varying cultural cuisines may be represented on the same street. Though it's easier to explore the city as an upper classman when one is more likely to have easy access to private vehicles, freshmen and sophomores tend to be on the shorter side of the stick. Marta (Atlanta's transportation system) can be difficult to navigate and, though close (about a 15 minute drive), Atlanta does not step on Emory's toes. Hence, many underclassmen live in what is termed the "Emory bubble". Once the bubble has been escaped, however, one becomes aware of Atlanta's beautiful array of flavors. Thai restaurants are divine in taste, low in cost, and highly flocked to. Latin eateries, such as Papi's, attract students for its hot, Cuban sandwiches and rice and beans plates. Fine dining options are also available for students with heavier wallets, such as Atlanta Grill, located inside of the Ritz-Carlton. Another popular spot is Atlantic Station, a sprawling shopping complex that dominates a large portion of the region near Centennial Park. Regal's movie theater popcorn, Coldstone's cake batter ice cream and California Pizza's hawaiian pizza can be bought at this location, among many others. Finally, an Emory student can never go wrong with Atlanta dining landmarks, such as the Varsity, known for it's juicy burgers and fries (it was even featured in a Travel Channel special about this great city!), Underground Atlanta, and Little Five Points. Atlantan cuisine bursts with flavor, but what does it take for an Emory student to access all of this? One must escape the Emory bubble!

Basics Are There

There's Emory Village which is connected to the campus. You can eat at Panera, a frozen yogurt place, Rise N Dine, Barnes and Nobles, Pizza place, and other random stores. A new Chipotle opened up recently, and it's a place students go frequently. There's a small falafel store which the falafel is so good. Rise N Dine is a place that serves breakfast/brunch foods- also really good, but a bit more pricier.

It's really not much, and there's nothing fancy there. But it's a nice change from the campus dining foods.

For other dining options, you're going to have to have a car/taxi to go into the Atlanta are, which is a hassle. There's also shuttles that run to Lenox area, Midtown hospital, Kroger/Publix plaza, and and other locations, and you can take advantage of that if you wish to do so.

Student Discounts Everywhere

There are always student discounts at places like Cane's, Zaxby's, Little Caesar's, yogurt shops, etc., plus frequent specials at the bars downtown. There is a huge variety of restaurant choices, most of which are very convenient and none are far from campus.
