Diversity at Emory University

The Melting Pot of Oxford

We had a freshmen seminar class in which we discussed these very topics. There are many international students at the Oxford campus of Emory University, and there are many different races present. There is a wide economic diversity within the students on campus, but all students interact well with one another and no one holds their class over one another. Everyone works equally hard and jobs are offered pretty fairly according to financial need. The homosexuals on campus are accepted and are not isolated from the heterosexuals. All in all Oxford provides a diverse campus in all these aspects and the students are all very friendly and inviting, and don't judge one another based on their race, sexual orientation, or economic background. It's a wonderful place to find your true friends and self and strive to be the best you can be.

Most of the girls are VERY FASHIONABLE. The white guys are cute but the black guys not so much. I mean it's a very hard school to get into so and we don't have a football team so i guess you can't expect all the guys to be hot and buff.

There are certainly plenty of parties to go to on any night of the week. That doesn't mean you have to party though; there are a ton of good restaurants in Atlanta and a bunch of volunteering projects as well. However, the majority of people are studying during the week so you'll be pretty limited on how many people are around to go with you.

Every Single building here is great, the WoodPec 9gym) is amazing, with indoor tennis squash and basketball courts for everyone's use. The Duc is a nice building too, as is the library. Every Single classroom is here is really nice.

Great Nightlife

Even as a freshman, as long as you are 18+, you can go to awesome nightclubs in ATL. Primal, Opera, and The Mansion Elan are some of the most popular. There are also many fun evnets at clubs like halloween parties or dayglow.

Oxford College of Emory University

Let me start off by saying that my opinions will differ greatly from many others at Oxford and I do not speak for everyone. There are certainly pros and cons to any college and I will try to give you both.

Lets start with Pros: Oxford college is much smaller, with only 950 undergrads which means smaller class sizes and more one-on-one with your professors. They focus more on liberal arts education than simply getting students to graduation by making sure they fulfill their requirements. You get to take classes in a lot of different areas, not just your major. Professors here really seem to care about the students and will help you if you ask for it.

Now for the cons: When touring the campus, my tour guides told me things like "everyone here is a family," "the dining halls are great," and "our social life is so much fun, we're still a completely dry campus." When I arrived in August however, it was pretty obvious that what they told me was simply for show. Oxford is very small; not automatically a bad thing, but many of the students here form cliques really quickly. On weekends it is rare to see many people on campus at all; most people are gone (either home or to Atlanta to party) and they trash the campus when they get back from partying at Atlanta's Emory Campus. A lot of the students here drink excessively; some of our Student Government members were even kicked out this year for an honor council violation of possession and consumption of Alcohol. They "allow" one party on campus each month which they call Tavern Parties; they're thrown in a small building and they're chaperoned. That's not to say people don't pre-game like crazy because they definitely do. All-in-all tavern parties aren't much fun because people get really drunk and sloppy, it smells like sweat and alcohol, and its usually REALLY crowded. The students here don't like to mingle much either, if you're not already friends with them by the first month of school then they want nothing to do with you. I honestly feel like I am in high school all over again.

My advice to anyone who wants to come to Oxford College, make sure you know what you're getting into. If you want the party scene and the clique-y feel, Oxford is for you. If you want school spirit, open-minded students, and fun stuff to do on a daily basis other than getting drunk or high then I would either strongly consider Emory's Atlanta Campus or another university.

Oxford College of Emory

The facilities on Oxford's campus are a little bit dated since the campus is much older than Atlanta's campus. The dining hall is updated but that doesn't mean the food is any good; it closes at 8pm but often runs out of food well before then. The Library was just remodeled last year so it is really nice but the book selection is a little limited. Campus life is pretty much non-existent; most students go to Atlanta campus. Oxford is in a very small town called Covington, the closest restaurants are Long Horn Steakhouse and Applebee's and the closest movie theater is twenty minutes away. Oxford runs shuttles to Walmart and the mall a couple times a week and to Atlanta on weekends until 1am though so transportation to those places isn't impossible without a car. The gym is nice; what I've seen of it though I'm not much of an athletic person. Activities on campus are limited as well do to, quite frankly, a lack of motivation and school spirit by the students. The most fun event Oxford has is during orientation and its called Oxford Olympics. Oxford Olympics is essentially a field day; you run around campus playing different games and doing obstacle courses. Once a month they throw a school sanctioned party called a Tavern Party; they're put on by the different social clubs on campus and are supervised by other students and by student activity committee advisers. All-in-all there isn't much going on at Oxford.

Never get tagged in Facebook photos

This past week, the emory disciplinary council did something that i cannot believe. 4 people were put on probation for drawing on dorm decorations, while another received probation for NOT leaving the scene, all because one sa was upset that they stole her precious harry potter drawing. The bottom line, is if you come to emory prepare to put up with a lot of bull s*** about stupid stuff. I will be honest when i say that i wish i never came here. Unless you totally follow every rule in the code of ethics, don't come here. Emory might be a great academic school, but it is not worth putting up with all the bureaucratic bs that fill this school.

Emory is turning into a hipster; they have just about gotten rid of all the PC's and replaced them with macs even though a lot of students oppose the move. On the plus side, Cox Computing center is one of the coolest places I have seen on any campus.

Perfect Southern Life

Location, location, location. Emory University is situated in the center of a middle-class residential area with a small town feel. However, down-town Atlanta is just a couple of miles away. Atlanta is full of options for entertainment such as the Aquarium, CNN headquarters, The World of Coca-Cola, and many historical sites.

Emory University houses one of the most beautiful art collections I have seen. Emory is located near the CDC, which provides great research opportunities for students. What I appreciate the most around my school is the free transportation services. Emory University and Atlanta are the best choices for me.

Tons of Life

Clubs around Atlanta are awesome. A lot of college nights are offered regularly where students at the age of 18+ can party, so don't be discouraged because you're not 21 yet. Also, the transportation around Emory is really convenient - they have an Emory shuttle that goes around different Emory campuses, cab services, and a zippy car renting service if you're over 21. I would consider Emory a work hard, play hard college.

Get Involved!

Emory has an amazing athletic center. While it does not have a football, a lot of the school spirit is focused around clubs, campus activities, etc. The library has a lot of historical documents that students can refer to. There's always something to do at Emory - so many campus activities going on. Overall, Atlanta is a great college town - there's a lot to do even off campus in the surrounding areas, so you'll never get bored.

Okay

Emory is a very diverse school but people tend to hang out with people who are like them. A lot of very wealthy people, some of who join frats and sororities. Almost every one wears designer labels and there is a large population of international students, especially from East Asia.

Amazing Professor

I applied to Emory University for its small campus, Oxford College. My freshman year at Oxford College was amazing. I met Dr.Herman who has been an influential role in my decision to continue working as chemistry lab assistant and learn more about Chemistry from its molecular to the sub atomic view. I absolutely love it here.

Always Fun...But Slightly Repetitive.

There is always something to do on campus at Emory...frat parties. The frats try to vary things by having themed parties that are open to everyone. They also host more exclusive date parties and mixers, which are never a let-down. Surrounding Emory there are a lot of clubs and bars that provide different settings for drinking and partying...some places are stricter than others on IDs. Luckily ATeL hosts a lot of Under 21 events around Emory which allows a larger amount of the student body to go out and have a good time, even if they can't drink at the venues.

Campus Housing at Emory University

Great and Getting Better

Emory is completely replacing all of the old freshman dorms with new freshman dorms. Four new buildings have gone up in the last three years and they're all gorgeous. The newest dorm, Longstreet-Means, has a fireplace and looks more like a ski lodge than a dorm. I lived in one of the new freshman dorms, Few Hall, as a freshman and it was incredible. Another cool thing is that all of the new dorms are LEED certified green buildings. The worst Freshman dorm, Dobbs, has tiny rooms, but as the oldest dorm on campus and has a lot of character. The residents love it for the open-door culture and really tight-knit community.

There's a little bit of a sophomore slump in terms of on-campus housing, but sophomores get a lot of options including Greek housing, suite-style rooms, apartment-style housing, and recently renovated dorms. The sorority lodges are only a few years old and are really nice. The frat houses get a lot more abuse but are large and well maintained by the university.

As an upperclassman, you can live on Clairmont Campus with apartment-style housing. The Clairmont Campus is on the other side of Lullwater park, so it's a 5 minute bike ride or 15 minute walk to main campus, which can be a bit of an inconvenience in a pinch, but Cliff shuttle buses run ever few minutes so it's not usually a problem. The student activity center and outdoor olympic-sized pool are a lot of fun to hang out at.
