Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

New York City is an exciting place to live, but at times, it can also be a dangerous place if students aren't careful or wise about their decisions. FIT prides itself in having very tight security when it comes to buildings on campus and the residence halls. The security is so strict that students who are caught violating the rules are sometimes expelled from campus and never allowed on the property again. When entering every building on campus, a student must show his or her FIT ID. If a student has forgotten his or her ID, the lobby of the Marvin Feldman Center (C Building) has a student roster, in which the student will be given a pass for that day only.

Major issues are seen in the residence halls when it comes to the strictness of FIT's campus. These issues include visitation, drinking, and illegal substances. If students do not follow these guidelines, the Department of Residential Life has no problem putting a fine on the student's account, making him or her lose visitation privileges, as well as potentially kicking him or her out of the dorms for good. If you play by the rules, you will have a hard time finding something to get in trouble for. Although these rules seem strict to students, parents can feel at ease knowing their children are safe in a big city like New York.

Too Strict or Not?

On campus security asks for ID, constantly check around the buildings to make sure everything is OK. That makes me feel secure. However in front of the no smoking sign outside the buildings, tons of people smoke and nobody says anything to them. I never had issues with rules and regulations. It seems FIT tries to accommodate people as much as they can.Rules are there to protect us, I don't think they make them up to annoy students professors or other people who work there.

Don't Make a Lot of Noise

If you are having a party in your room, don't be loud or else you will get your visitation taken away for a bit

Guests

Guests are required to be signed into dorm buildings where they surrender their ID for a pass and sign out to exchange the pass for their ID. Even students who attend the college but don't dorm are required to be signed in and out and all guests must be gone by midnight unless they are signed in for overnight. It's mildly inconvenient for the dorming student but in best interest for safety reasons.

Visitation Policies

Students living in the residence halls must abide to the strict guidelines of Residential Life. Day guests are considered guests checked in between 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. In order to have overnight guests, you must register your guest by 4 p.m. the day of the visit; if a day guest is signed out after 12 a.m. without registering, the student will have consequences. Students are allowed to have one guest stay a maximum of two consecutive nights, unless an extended overnight is pre-approved. Overnight visitation is limited to eight nights per month.

Did You Know? If students try to come into any residence hall while visibly intoxicated, security may force them to go to the hospital.
