College Prowler Take
Most students at FIT have their own computer at home or in their dorm room. Some bring a laptop to take advantage of the wireless spots on campus, but most do not bring them to class. Since a lot of students are commuters, the labs can become a type of refuge for those who need to kill time in between classes. Although there are plenty of computers available and the labs are never too busy, a majority of students do not use the computers routinely.
Many students feel that the network connection is too slow, and issues sometimes arise with logging on to the computers. For security purposes, passwords used to log on to the computers are changed about twice a semester. Each student has their own username and password, and when they are not a frequent user of the computer labs, they tend to forget the password. These students are then sent to the department at FIT that handles the school’s computers. It can become a real pain, so your best bet is to keep track of your password. Even with the network being slow, FIT works hard to offer its students access to modern and emerging technologies and software, including the latest in graphic design applications and computer-aided design.

I only used the computer labs a few times this year since I did have my own computer. It is better to have your own computer so you don’t have to worry about waiting in the labs—around finals, everyone and their brother is dying for a computer slot. |

Did You Know?
• All FIT students are given a school e-mail address (ex: Jane_Doe@fitnyc.edu) and are encouraged to use it. Teachers are really only supposed to e-mail you on your FIT e-mail, so forget about giving your Yahoo! or AOL account to your teacher.
• If you refuse to get rid of your other e-mail account, you can always have your e-mail from FIT forwarded to that account.
• FIT students can register for classes, pay tuition, check their grades, and more through the Online Student Information System at FIT’s Web site.
• The Blackboard learning system (a system used to manage courses online) is available at FIT.
