College Prowler Take

Students studying here have the opportunity to meet people of all different races, religions, and backgrounds. Although the majority of FIT students are girls, they come from everywhere around the world. You can meet classmates from China, Russia, France, and many other countries. You will notice that there are a lot of programs and events organized on campus to get these students to meet others.

Not only will you experience diversity at FIT, but no city on Earth can match New York’s rich ethnic diversity. Today, about a third of New Yorkers are immigrants, and that percentage is still growing. If you take a walk around New York City, you will see and hear people of all different cultures. The city includes populations of immigrants from over 180 countries who help make it one of the most cosmopolitan places on earth to live.

There are students of all colors and ethnicities. You’ll hear a lot of different languages on campus, especially Asian languages. Generally, diversity varies by major. In fashion merchandising, you’re more likely to have a classroom filled with middle-class white girls than, say, in menswear design. On campus, you’re likely to see a Hello Kitty girl, someone in a business suit, someone with pink hair, a metrosexual guy, a trendy student, a skater boy, someone wearing a turban, a goth, and someone who definitely made their clothes at home—all in the same five minutes.

FIT is diverse in the many cultures that put together the student body. We have a campus full of students from all over the world, but I wouldn’t say they are diverse in their way of life and reasons they came to FIT.
