Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

FIT is like a miniature melting pot when it comes to the diverse group of students that attend the school. Students have the opportunity to meet other students from all different races, religions, and backgrounds. You can meet classmates from a large number of countries, as these students flock to FIT for the well-established fashion-related education. There are a number of programs and events dedicated to these students, open to everyone in order to get them acquainted with others.

Not only will you see such a diverse group of people at FIT, but you will also experience this in New York City. About a third of New York's population is considered immigrants, and that number continues to grow. With just a quick walk around the city, you will hear and see people of all different cultures.

Driven Diversity

There so many people from different backgrounds and places, it's pretty cool having people from different countries coming to FIT. One thing I like is how driven people are in FIT, we are serious about our career.

Very Diverse

FIT is extremely diverse! There are many ethnicities represented as well as nationalities. There are also a range of religions. I've met Orthodox Jews to Muslims. There is also a substantial number of gay and lesbian students. The only lack of diversity is in the ratio of girls to guys. There are hardly any guys.

Student Survey Poll ResultsWhat's This?

How diverse is the student body in the following areas?

How diverse is your personal circle of friends in the following areas?

How accepting is the campus community as a whole toward someone who falls into the minority (ethnic, sexual, or religious)?

How would you best describe your personal political beliefs?

How would you best describe the political beliefs of campus as a whole?

Facts

Gay Pride

There is a large number of gay students who attend FIT. The school is also located in the predominantly gay neighborhood of Chelsea. The LGBT student club on campus shows support toward the gay community. If this is something you are uncomfortable being around, think twice about attending FIT.

Political Activity

Most students at FIT are politically and socially liberal, but there is a growing number of conservative students, even if there is little spoken about political opinions.

Economic Status

There is no distinction of who is rich and who is not, unless you come around a group of students who flaunt their parent's wealth. A lot of students rely on financial aid to help with their college expenses.

Most Common Religions

Religious choices vary from Catholic to Christian to Judaism to everything in between.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are many clubs that serve minorities on campus such as Asian Student Network, BRAG (Black Retail Action Group),
BSU (Black Student Union), ICE (Indian Cultural Exchange), and KCCC (Korean Campus Crusade For Christ).

Did You Know? FIT hosts its own Diversity Council, which has a strategic goal to create a campus that is "purposefully diverse."

Most Recent Student Author

College Prowler guides are in the hands of students throughout the entire process. Because you can't make student-written guides without the students, we have students at each campus who write, edit, and survey their peers for every guide that we publish.
