Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The 1 : The subway line located right on FIT’s campus
  • A, B, C, D, and E Buildings: All of the buildings at FIT are named after a letter; you’ll hear students refer to the campus by letters. However, it is rumored that the faculty is trying to get rid of these letters and wants to start referring to buildings by their real names. Example: The "A" building is the David Dubinsky Student Center.
  • Angel: What some may know of as "Blackboard," teachers will post assignments and send messages through Angel, which can be accessed through MyFIT.
  • Common hour: The hour between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays when students do not have class. This is typically the hour in which student organizations will have their weekly or monthly meetings.
  • FITSA: FITSA stands for FIT Student Association. All full-time students pay an activities fee (included in tuition) and are automatically members of FITSA. The association is responsible for student self-government, financially supports the clubs and organizations on campus, and plans cultural and extracurricular activities for students.
  • Graphics lab: The professional printing lab on campus. If you want to take advantage, be prepared and submit your work early. They typically run on a 24-hour turnaround.
  • MyFIT: The online student portal that every FIT student has access to
  • SUNY: State University of New York (FIT is a part of the SUNY system)
  • WWD: Women’s Wear Daily is a popular trade magazine that fashion students must read.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • A lot of students dress to impress (FIT is very image conscious).
  • Campus life is lacking compared to other colleges.
  • FIT is more of a commuter school.
  • FIT is somewhat of a community college.
  • More information about academic majors. Some students discover they were meant for another major after starting the school year studying something else.
  • SUNY schools have general education requirements, so students at FIT have to complete all 10 general education courses—including basic communication, arts, math, humanities, science, foreign language, social science, other world civilizations, western civilization, and American history—before you can graduate with a degree from FIT.
Tips to Succeed
  • Attend the special events that are exclusive to FIT students.
  • FIT offers internship and study abroad opportunities that aren’t available anywhere else, so take advantage.
  • Learn the layout of New York City and the subway system as soon as possible.
  • Network with professors; most of them are in the industry and know somebody who knows somebody.

Opportunities

My school offers many opportunities and opens many doors for students. Almost all the professors have experience in their field they teach, and also many have connections within the industry. In addition, there are chances for internships and jobs in the industry.

Strong Curriculum

The school admits students directly into their curriculum of choice so there is no 'declaration of major' process at all. Everyone has a passion for either design, fashion or acquiring business opportunities in either one of the fields. This creates a really strong community of serious artists, designers and entrepreneurs. Fashion facilities, not to mention the others, are amazing. The scene fits well with the city and is a great mixture as NYC is pretty much the place to be. Internships are offered which give you a foot in the door with top companies. Tuition is under $5000...a year! It simply just cannot get any better than that.

Its Very Connected With the Industry

I'm in the fashion design program and most of my professors are still in the industry or have had a lot of experience in it. FIT professors did not go to school necessarily to teach which can sometimes be frustrating, but it helps close the gap between classroom and work. I'm not sure if this is true for all majors but as someone who has transferred from a big state college, its not a typical college experience. There isn't much campus pride because we certainly don't have a big sports following and the campus kind of looks like any other building in the city so people kind of stick to their own thing.

Facts

Traditions
  • Block Party: Held the first Saturday of May every year, this event is the kickoff to the last few weeks of the semester as students prepare for finals.
  • Flea Market: Held on certain Thursdays during common hour, vendors will come in and sell gifts to FIT students. Students have gotten excellent deals on vintage pieces.
  • FUSION: The "Super Bowl of fashion," as some may call it. This is when highly recognized design students from FIT go head to head with design students from Parsons in an annual fashion show. Judges are prominent figures in the fashion industry, and the event is open to both FIT and Parsons students.
  • Mr. FIT: The annual drag queen pageant held every spring at FIT.
  • Semi Formal: Every spring, a formal dance is held where students are given the opportunity to bring a date and mingle with fellow FIT students.
  • WOW Week (Week of Welcome) : This is an orientation held for incoming students in the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. The students learn about FIT through planned activities. WOW Week is the perfect opportunity to meet other students before school starts.
Urban Legends
  • Every guy that attends FIT is gay.
  • FIT is still conquering the urban legend that everyone who attends the school wants to be a fashion designer. FIT has a very distinguished business and technology school, as well as several other art majors that do not deal with fashion design.
  • FMM (Fashion Merchandising Management) majors know nothing about the fashion industry—an urban legend that is completely untrue.
