Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

New York City certainly lives up to the saying, "The City That Never Sleeps," especially when it comes to nightlife. There are so many places to go that the hardest thing is choosing where to go. From bars and clubs to VIP lounges, the nightlife caters to any preference in New York City.

Nightlife starts late, usually around midnight. Get in good with a promoter who will help you get VIP table service or who can help you get in to places without having to pay a cover, even if it's not to drink. Research places and find out the dress code because you will get turned down at the door if you are not dressed to standard. Unfortunately, the doorman will turn you down if you don't look good, so play along—this is New York City.

Nightlife

The nightlife at FIT is nothing huge. They provide us with a couple dorm hall parties and some within the cafeteria. It is fun but not as fun as other colleges.

Three Letters: NYC!

Nightlife is mostly for students who are 21 and older. There are a lot of 21+ clubs. But is New York City so you can find really trendy places to go with your friends at night. Lots of really nice restaurants. There are no house parties and very few 18-and-older clubs.

NEW YORK CITY

There's always parties in NYC every single day, but it would be more fun to be 21+...but for now I'm living life!

What is the party scene like on campus?

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

There are endless clubs for you to check out in New York City. Research who is promoting the club on the night you want to go and sign up on a guest list, which will entitle you to either free or reduced admission. The people who work the door of these nightclubs are fairly democratic, but you’ll save yourself a lot of hassle if you show up before 1 a.m. and leave the sweatshirt and beat-up sneakers at home.

Bar Prowler

There are plenty of bars for you to check out in New York City. It may even become overwhelming with the amount of choices you have. Here is a list of some top spots that are highly recommended, and most of the drink prices are actually reasonable! (Note: cheaper drinks are found in bars, not nightclubs.)

Closing Time

4 a.m.

Cheapest Place to Get a Drink

If you're just out to get a drink and not necessarily to experience the "nightlife," most places offer a happy hour special. You can find these by simply taking a walk anywhere, and most bars will have signs outside that list their happy hour specials.

Organization Parties

The Department of Student Life has several organizational parties throughout the year, such as "FITSA's Night Out," Homecoming, and even a semi-formal.

Did You Know? Guys: if you pull up to a club with an entourage of hot girls, you will more than likely get in for free. If not, be expected to pay.

Webster Hall

This is what we in New York City call a "mega-club." Each of the four floors is geared toward a different crowd with a different type of music. This place is huge! Although there is a pricey cover and the drinks are typical (expensive and not too big), this is one club that everyone should experience.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Off the Wagon

This bar is the local watering hole for nearby NYU students. There is a loud and friendly feel to this place that makes you think you are at a campus keg party. There are 14 beers on tap, darts, foosball, and a pool table. This two-story bar is usually packed. The jukebox tends to blast ‘80s music, and when there is a DJ, he takes requests.

109 MacDougal St.

New York City

(212) 533-4487

Max Fish

A hip crowd hangs out here. There are plastic skulls lining the wall and the ceilings, with some of the best choices of jukebox music in New York City. It can be a little expensive, but definitely worth it.

176 Ludlow St.

New York City

(212) 529-3959

Tempest Bar

This is where everyone at FIT who lives in the dorms goes for cheap drinks close to school. Tempest is a dive bar, but it usually lets FIT students in if they show their school ID. Men come here from all over Manhattan, looking to meet FIT girls.

407 Eighth Ave.

New York City

(212) 643-1502

www.tempestbarnyc.com

The Park

The Park is taxi-garage-turned-restaurant/bar. Here, you may feel like you are in a ski lodge because of the scenery and architecture of this venue. The Park is home to one of the city’s most expansive and popular outdoor patios. A 30-foot tree sits in the middle of the dining room and the maître d' likes to sport red-laced sneakers with his suit. The VIP hot tub on the roof is the place to be—if you can get up there!

118 10th Ave.

New York City

(212) 352-3313

Down the Hatch

Down the Hatch is an undergrad haven, where NYU boys come to shout, drink (and spill) beer, and let off steam. If you’re looking for an evening where you don’t stumble home with beer in your hair and ketchup on your shirt, stay away. If, however, you’re looking to capture a little frat party fun, this just might be your scene.

179 W. Fourth St. at Sixth Avenue

New York City

(212) 627-9747

www.nycbestbar.com/downthehatch

AVA Lounge

Most people dress up and make it a point to go up to the roof deck and check out the view of the city. There are specialty drinks made here, but they can get pricey—stick to more traditional drinks and your wallet might have some money left in it when you leave.

210 W. 55th St., between Seventh and Eighth avenues

New York City

(212) 956-7020

www.avaloungenyc.com

Maritime Hotel

A younger, professional crowd frequents this bar for the open-air seating or the vintage-style armchairs and sofas. Short-skirted waitresses deliver Mediterranean-inspired drinks and snacks from the hotel’s Italian bistro. It can get pricey, but the scene here is unrivaled.

363 W. 16th St.

New York City

(212) 242-4300

www.themaritimehotel.com

Falucka

If you love music and belly dancing, this is the place for you. But if you don’t like the smell of smoke, don’t go here; there are hookahs, and people smoke flavored tobacco out of them. The drinks are reasonable, and the service is above average.

162 Bleecker St.

New York City

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Webster Hall

Webster Hall typically lets in 19-and-up students; you just won't be able to drink. A lot of the time, promoters will Facebook you and tell you they can get you into top-notch places, but be careful about that!
