Getting a Parking Permit

There is no FIT parking! Parking is available only on the streets of New York City.

College Prowler Take

Unless you must drive into New York City, do not attempt it! There is no parking on campus. The real question is why even bother to own a car in New York City? Parking is hard, cab drivers don’t usually like to share the road, and the public transportation system can take you wherever you want to go.

If you refuse to take this advice and believe that driving is still your best option, then think about the following information. If you are driving into Manhattan, you must be aware of toll bridges and tunnels as well as road construction. Keep in mind that turning right on red is illegal everywhere in New York City except where signs specifically allow it. Beware of parking regulations, which vary from street to street! Even if there is no sign posted where you park your car, a sign way at the other end of the block can apply to your vehicle. Your best bet, if you live outside of Manhattan, is to find any way but driving to get to school. This will allow you peace of mind and one less bad experience while in college.

There is no parking on campus, unless you want to give your life savings to a parking attendant at a parking garage—or you can drive around for hours looking for a free spot on the streets.

As it is everywhere in the city, it’s really hard to find a street spot. Finding a street spot is based on pure luck. However, across the street from school is a parking lot that offers discounts on monthly passes.

Best Place to Find a Parking Spot:
Parking garages, but it will cost you.

Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here:
It is rare to actually snag a spot on 27th Street, where FIT is located. You can only park there after 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, but you can park anytime on the weekends. If you are patient, you can wait till someone leaves or arrive at school by 5 p.m. and wait in your car until the spots are legal to park in.
