- 1 and 9 - The subway line located right on FIT’s campus
- A, B, C, D, and E Buildings - All the buildings at FIT are named after a letter—you’ll hear students refer to the campus by letters.
- FITSA - The FIT Student Association, all full-time students pay an activities fee, which is included in their tuition, and are automatically members of FITSA. The association is responsible for student self-government, financially supports the clubs and organizations on campus, and plans cultural and extracurricular activities for students.
- Graphics Lab - The professional printing lab on campus
- MSG - Madison Square Garden
- SUNY - State University of New York (FIT is a part of the SUNY system)
- WWD - Women’s Wear Daily, a popular trade magazine that fashion students must read
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
- A lot of students dress to impress (FIT is very image conscious).
- Campus life lacks here compared to other colleges.
- FIT is more of a commuter school.
- SUNY schools have general education requirements, so students at FIT have to complete all 10 general education courses—including basic communication, arts, math, humanities, science, foreign language, social science, other world civilizations, western civilization, and American history—before you can graduate with a degree from FIT.
Tips to Succeed
- FIT offers internship and study abroad opportunities that aren’t available anywhere else, so take advantage.
- Learn the layout of New York City and the subway system as soon as possible.
Urban Legends
- Another rumor is that all FIT guys are gay. Not true. Some guys are straight here.
- One rumor about FIT that the school has not yet conquered is that all of its students are fashion designers or are in fashion-related programs. FIT actually has a business and technology school that is outstanding, and the college is working on publicizing it.
Traditions
- Annual Grand Semi Formal Evening - Every May, a formal dance is held where students are given the opportunity to bring a date and mingle with fellow FIT students.
- Graduation at Radio City Music Hall - FIT students do not graduate in the school gym, they graduate in Radio City Music Hall. Every year, there is a distinguished speaker that comes to graduation and talks to the students about life after college.
- Recognition Banquet and Inaugural Dinner - Every year, there is a dinner and ceremony hosted by Student Life. This event honors faculty and students who have helped with extracurricular activities during the school year. Awards are given out, and the new officers for student government are inaugurated.
- WOW Week (Week of Welcome) - This is an orientation held for incoming students in the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. The students learn about FIT through planned activities, such as a networking luncheon and “Tell It Like It Is.” (Current students meet with the incoming students to tell them what it’s really like at FIT.) WOW Week is the perfect opportunity to meet other students before school starts.
School Spirit
You will see students here wearing clothes with the FIT logo on them, but not many will wear anything that has do with the sports here. There is a FIT spirit week held in November, followed by a Homecoming game and celebration for the basketball teams. Other than that, there are not many more scheduled events to help promote school spirit.
