Night life is what you make it, which means that if you want one, you should go to Vanderbilt. Parties do happen at Fisk, but they're usually over by 1 am, and if TSU is invited, it's probably going to get shut down by 11:30. Your best bet if you want to party is to head to one of the other colleges around the city. Plus, the area around Vanderbilt and Belmont is where the best bars are located.

If you don't have a car, you're pretty much stuck unless you ask for a ride or take the bus to your destination. The bus system isn't the worst that I've encountered, but it isn't great either. If you miss it, you're probably going to have to wait between 30-40 minutes for the next one to arrive, and a lot of the time that's not even a reliable time-frame. Walking to certain places is possible, but I really wouldn't recommend it after dark, unless you're walking with a few other people.

While Fisk University is an Historically Black University, there is a lot of diversity present on the campus. Students hail from all different regions of the United States, and there is a strong Caribbean and African student population as well. There are even a few white and latino students who have enrolled as well. A lot of students on Fisk's campus are very religious, and spiritual life means a great deal to many people (you're kind of looked at strangely if you have a more agnostic or atheist viewpoint). There is a strong LGBT presence on campus amongst the students and the faculty, but that can sometimes clash with those who are a bit more conservative. There isn't, as far as I know, a Gay/Straight alliance, even though there has been talk of starting one within the past few years. All in all, Fisk is a pretty interesting campus to go to if you want a good education and to learn about many of the different elements within modern African-American culture.

There are a lot of greeks on Fisk's campus and a lot of them try to do both parties and community service-oriented projects. I do wish that more of them worked together on certain things, rather than each organization trying to do everything separately.

The Girl Dorm Is the Most Livable – The boys dorm was built in the 60's or 70's and it's nasty. They have rats and roaches and the bathrooms are just awful. On the other hand, the only problem that the girls dorm really has is that sometimes the air doesn't feel the need to work.

We have the metro bus and bike racks to tour the city. The bus is $2.50 for a pass for all day and the bikes are charged by some sort of card and you're charge for however long you have them

As far as where I want to go in my career, Fisk is not the best university for it. I eventually want to be a bilingual speech language pathologist, and didn't discover that until second semester of freshman year. If I had realized it sooner, I would have gone to school with a much better language program. It could get better, but so far I am not impressed. Science majors such as Chemistry and Biology though, are very popular at Fisk, even though it is a liberal arts school. These programs have a lot of partnerships with other universities in Nashville. Such as Meharry and Vanderbilt. Do your research before a choosing a school that doesn't offer a lot of different programs, or ones that you may be interested in in the future.

Fisk has a curfew of midnight for all freshmen. In the freshmen girls dorm, you get one or two warnings then get fined $50 for being out past midnight. The boys have the same rules but they are not enforced equally. In the freshman girl's dorm, visitation is from 7-11:30 pm and can only be done in the lobby. No one can go in your room, except for the girls that live in that dorm. Upper classmen dorms have visitation from 7pm-12am. No matter what day it is. A lot of people get around this by either sneaking in, being cool with an R.A or security.

There are no difficulties in order to be a Spanish major at Fisk. You can start from the beginning, or if you pass a language test, get placed in more advanced course. Some of the professors are serious. Its like taking high school Spanish. There isn't a study abroad program either. And as a language major that is very important.

The traditions at Fisk are alive and well. The ceremonies you'll participate in as a freshmen will definitely be memorable. The campus facilities are in pretty bad shape. Do not expect to be super nice. The gym needs a face lift, the dorms need a lot of upgrading.
College Sophomore 2013-07-13T02:55:15Z
The food is horrible. After your freshmen year, do not bother getting a meal plan. You will eat off campus way more. The food isn't healthy. There were a couple occasions of pests being in the food and drink machine. Get a fridge and stock up!
College Sophomore 2013-07-13T02:52:23Z
The whole entire campus needs an upgrade. Like most HBCU's the facilities are less than lack luster. It is definitely not five star but its livable. The campus on the outside is beautiful but on the inside (particularly the dorms) need a lot of cosmetic help.

Its an historical black college. Its diverse being that the majority of the school is black. If you are looking for an array of different ethnicities and heritages, it may not be the right school for you.

The school is strict with certain policies. Other policies, such as smoking and drinking, are not strictly enforced.

Fisk is very small, about 500 students and majority do not own cars so parking is not so bad. The campus is about a block long so no matter where you park, it will always be easily to get to your car within a few minutes. I feel that its kind of pointless to charge students for parking permits because of the small population but hey, they have to make money some how right??!
College Student 2013-07-05T16:40:51Z
Fisk is full of intelligent students from all over the world. At a glance, almost everyone looks black but when to begin to socialize you'll meet people from South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, the Bahamas, Brazil, and even Mexico. Diverisity does not only suggest race, but also economics and up bringing. Many students are from poor families and many students are from well off families. These different lifestyles form bonds that can never be broken!
College Student 2013-07-05T16:28:46Z
The dining on the same block as Fisk is nothing but chicken (Probably because its in a not so diverse neighborhood, wink wink). If you go up a few blocks near the Vanderbilt University campus on West end, you will find an endless amount of resturants that are appealing to any price range. THere is everything from Wendy's to a TGI Fridays and even numerous sushi spots. Even if you do not have a car, its just a 20 minute walk away from campus to get to West end.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
