Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As a historically black college, the University provides educational opportunities to African Americans, but it also serves students of other races, religions, and different backgrounds. Regardless of their background, academics are the top priority of everyone here. Students have to earn their grades—there are no handouts—and professors push everyone to do better than their best. A major strength of FAMU is that the professors actually know the material they are teaching. Plus, FAMU promotes innovative ways of teaching, research, and use of technology, so students get a clear glimpse of what their career choice will be like. In terms of programs offered, the University has it all, from agriculture to nursing to the award-winning journalism school. However, many students argue that the University does not have enough art-based majors and caters to sciences and agriculture.

The professors here have great relationships with the students. The professors are easy to talk to and are willing to help students earn the best grades possible. The workload can get pretty heavy, but it’s not unmanageable. Advisers also are very helpful and good at communicating the requirements each student needs in order to graduate in four years. However, students are encouraged to handle registering and advising as early as possible because of the high demand of counseling from the staff.

There Are Good Programs and Bad

Some of the programs at Florida A&M University are top notch. The architecture, journalism, and pharmacy programs are great. Some programs fall under the radar and are victim to under funding and a lack of exposure to turn them into a popular and successful program. The professors here, or at least the ones I have come across, are all committed to teaching and are highly qualified.

Life of a Biology Student

I am a student in the College of Arts and Sciences perusing a bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Medicine. So far I am satisfied with my education. I will admit classes are hard at times but if you communicate with your professors and ask for help, they are more than willing to assist you. Various clubs have been established to help students in this field of study ranging from taking trips to visit various medical schools, to study groups.

Detailed Academic Curriculum

The pharmacy program curriculum is rather intriguing as well as challenging which makes for a greater interest in the topics discussed. Our professors are easy to reach outside of classroom time to assist with work. They are understanding of our workload, but at the same time expect a lot of us as students.
