Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus housing at FAMU has its ups and downs, like most colleges. However, the proximity of the dorms to classes is very good—students literally just have to step out of their dorms and cross the street. Some complaints about the dorms is that the elevators run slowly, the rules regarding opposite-sex visitation are strict, and the old dorms need to be renovated. However, while the dorms may not be that spacious, they are well maintained. This is helped by the fact that students need to keep their rooms in good condition or else they’ll receive a fine, and the resident assistants are usually very strict when it comes to the cleanliness of the dorms. One thing resident students really like is that the lobbies in the dorms are spacious enough for them to have dorm events, like movie nights or group card games.

There has been a limited supply of housing for recent incoming classes due to the increase in enrollment (the University had its largest freshman class in 2010). As a result, a major renovation of two dormitories was announced and is underway. Now, students can look forward to great new housing in the future.

It's Better Than Being Homeless

I'm going to be honest. FAMU's housing isn't the greatest, but it's not the worst. I lived in Paddyfote for my freshman year in college. The dorms are not very spacious at all. It can get a little messy, but they try their best to keep the residents happy. The good thing about staying in a dorm is everything is at your fingertips. You don't have to worry about transportation to get to and from class and a very nice benefit, if you like to eat like I do, Paddyfote is right across the street from the cafeteria. Another thing to consider is if you choose to live on campus your meal plan comes along with your housing, which means depending on how many meals you apply for in a week, you can eat for free in the cafeteria and you get a number of Flex Bucks depending on that number. For example, I had a meal plan of 9 meals per week, with 250 Flex Bucks (250 dollars). Flex Bucks is a system that basically supplies you with "campus money." Flex Bucks can only be spent at on-campus restaurants. If you don't live on campus you have to pay for your food everyday and that does nothing but contribute to your college expenses. No one wants to pay more than they have to for college.

Palmetto South Is the Best Dorm

On campus dorms are ok, the only thing that I don't like are the community bathrooms. Getting a room on the on campus apartments- Palmetto North, Palmetto South, and Phase III- are the best choices.

Life of a College Student

The dorms on Florida A&M University campus are nice, a couple of them are better than some of the othe other ones but i like living on campus. It keeps me close to my college family and i feel like that is what we are when i live with them.
