Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The student response to campus living at FGCU is very positive. The freshman dorms, which are called South Village, are very nice and a great way for freshmen to meet people. The other dorms on campus include North Lake Village, which is apartment-style living. Most people say the kitchens are nice and that North Lake is close to the center of campus. The difference between South Village and North Lake is that at South Village, you only have one roommate and bathroom—no kitchen in your dorm room. At North Lake, you have three other roommates and a kitchen. The dorms have a well-equipped gym, a pool, a great campus restaurant, and many social events for the residents.

There's also West Lake Village, which is an off-campus apartment-style living option located near Gulf Coast Town Center. West Lake has very nice apartments and includes a shuttle service to and from main campus. Other than taking a shuttle from West Lake to campus, if you need to go anywhere, you can usually be there in just a 10-minute walk.

My First Semester Living on Campus at Florida Gulf Coast University

As a first year student living on dorm, it was so much better than what I had expected. Dorms for the freshman was a completely new building and I actually had a dorm with two roomates and all three of us had our own separate bedrooms, but a shared bathroom facility. The laudry room had powerful washers and dryers, there was a rec-room downstairs and whenever I had a room issue or some other problem, there was a dorm "captain" to help me navigate around till I could find a solution. Even better, there was bus pick-up every 15 mins. in front of the building to take me to my respective classes(building)and great eating places within walking distance. Cost of the dorm however, has been a bit of a challenge for me, my parents could afford to buy only one year of Florida Prepaid Dorm (equals to two semesters) so, having used up my first semester living the great dorm life, I decided to take the remainder of my core classes at a community college by my home in Miami, take on a partime job to save to live on campus for when I plan to go back to Florida Gulf Coast in the Fall. Living on dorm for my first semester has been very enligtening, it has helped me become independent, make more personal decisions on my own and provide a sense my own maturity and confidence. I would recommended it to every new student, but especially at Florida Gulf Coast University, because I believe that their program for incoming freshman was to cultivate what I had described especially for students who are living away from home for the firt time.

Nice

FGCU is known for having very nice dorms. South Lake is popular among freshmen, but I'm a freshmen and I live in North Lake. It depends on what type of enviroment you prefer.

Boring

The dorms are really nice and so are the people. I have met some really cool people that I am friends with now but they are only in my building. Most people keep to themselves. There isn't really anything to do on campus.
