Hot as Hell Early Fall and Late Spring, Nice Rest of the Time

That pretty much sums it up. Growing up in eastern Europe and NY made it a pretty harsh transition. Most native FLians are pretty used to it though.

Alcohol and Drugs

I live in on-campus housing (dorms), I feel like this school is better than a lot of school with enforcing policies but they becoming worse. I walk into my hallway and often smell pot (something RA's are supposed to strictly monitor but many don't care) and I see people outside in the dorm smoking areas all the time with joints. Drinking is also another issue that FGCU tries to enforce but at orientation and at move-in day, they take a very "their gonna drink anyway" attitude. Parties are occassionally busted but being someone who who niether drinks or smokes...there is more they could do. Also be warned there is supposed to be a strict fine for not using designated smoking areas but most do not bother and rarely get in trouble, so be aware you may get stuck behind a smoker going down the halls and have to breathe it.

Quiet Town

Not a party town at all, but also not much to do on weekends for college-aged students. Safe near campus and several areas away from campus. Lots of hockey and baseball events cheap, and sometimes free. Local Attitude towards students is welcoming and accepting. There are 2 of the bigger shopping centers in the county within 5 minutes of campus.

Good Mix of Students

There is a good mix of ethnic races at FGCU. Every gets along relatively well. I do not see much discrimination here. That may be due to the fact that it's a small school and everyone knows almost everyone, but still I am happy with the diversity here.

Southwest Florida Is Beautiful

The weather here is great. It's hot in the summer but not unbearable. The winters are wonderful and you can enjoy being outside pretty much year round. The campus is always green and blooming with flowers/trees. Nothing beats sitting outside in 75 degree weather in January in a T shirt to study/read/eat/talk to friends. It obviously never snows and the "rainy" season is in the summer, but it isn't awful.

Sports Are Widely Advertised

There is a lot of school spirit here. The sports are widely advertised. There are even people on golf carts with megaphones running around telling everyone about the soccer games on certain days. We don't have a football team so soccer is the next big thing

Very Diverse

This campus is very diverse. One thing I noticed more so here than at my community college is the number of same-sex relationships. It is a lot more open here and more frequent then I've ever seen before.

The Best

Florida Gulf Coast University has awesome security and takes many safety precautions. The biggest thing students have to worry about on Campus is wildlife considering we are an environmentally safe school. They monitor all housing areas to ensure that only safe fun is taking place and are available 24/7 to assist in any way that you need including transporation from one place to another.

Great Housing Options!

There are two different kinds of dorms on campus, and they both have about equal Pros and Cons. The freshman-only dorms are newer, and you only have to have one roommate. The bathroom is shared by only you and your roommate, so you don't have to go down the hall and use communal bathrooms like most college dorms. However, if you like to cook, you are better off in the North Lake apartment-style dorms. These are bigger and have a full kitchen, but you usually have 3 other roommates. Either one is good depending on what you're looking for.

Excellent Housing at FGCU

The dorms are excellent at FGCU, and the main reason I chose this school over other schools. There are the traditional style dorms for Freshman which are very clean and safe. However for the upperclassmen, there are apartment style dorms located on the water with an excellent view.

Individuality Is Key

This campus is growing and growing fast. There are many clubs and organizations on campus that help people express their individuality and pride in their heritage. Some clubs here are GSA (Gay Straight Alliance), LASO (Latin American Student Organization), BSA (Black Student Alliance), and many others. There is also a growing Greek life on campus. Many fraternities and sororities can be found on campus such as Kappa Kappa Psi, Zeta Tau Alpha, Sigma Chi, Chi Omega, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Delta Delta. All of these organizations have events open to the student body. Now all of these events are fun but if you want to relax you can take a trip down to the Waterfront where you can tan, sail, kayak, etc., all for free. Housing is located on a lake shared by the neighboring housing development.

FGCU is known for its science department. The environmental science program is very strong. There are many research opportunities for students interested in the sciences.

I have been very satisfied with the education experience I’ve received at FGCU. The professors have always given me time, even after hours, to help me comprehend the course material. All my questions are always addressed. Overall, I’m pleased.
