Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Diversity is present in the form of personalities, but not in culture. Students are mostly Caucasian with some sort of Christian background. The school is Methodist affiliated, but there are other religious groups present, as well. The main reason why there is not that much diversity is not because diversity is not promoted, but rather that there are not enough groups to encourage growth in this area. The multicultural club is an organization that allows people who are interested in other cultures to come together. However, they do not create much awareness.

Because Florida Southern is a private college, tuition is more expensive than public or community colleges. As such, the economic statuses of the students differ. There are those students that are well-to-do, then there are some that require financial aid. This does not create a gap among the students, though. The two different economic statuses of the students are swept aside by the fact that everyone is attending the same college to receive a higher education. Students are very tolerant of people, thoughts, and ideas that are different from their own. In this way, Florida Southern doesn't create cliques. Everyone is accepted. This could be because of the small size of the student body.

Multiculturalism

Multiculturalism; the appreciation, acceptance or promotion of multiple cultures, applied to the demographic make-up of a specific place, usually at the organizational level, e.g. schools.

Florida Southern College is very diverse. Ranging from all races from all over the country to all of the foreign students accepted annually, diversity is seen all over campus.

Not to say that they don't remain in "cliques" because some do. However the acceptance of race, gender, and sexuality don't seem to be an issue and everyone can find their own place.

There could be more integration of cultures and acceptance of different lifestyles displayed throughout the campus like Mixers etc.

Facts

Gay Pride

There is not much diversity in this area, so there are no clubs particularly for gay pride.

Political Activity

Most students are not aware of any political activity on campus. Students definitely share their views in class, but it depends on the course.

Economic Status

The economic status of students varies. Some students benefit very much from scholarships, while others do not need any help paying for college. There is enough variety that there isn't a division between students, for the most part.

Most Common Religions

Most students either have a Christian background or do not have a strong religious preference.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Groups such as Allies, International Student Association, and Multicultural Student Council add a dimension of diversity to the school. There are some events that these groups put on for the school that raise awareness. Overall, these groups are not widely known, however.

Did You Know? A required assembly called Convocation provides inspirational messages from various speakers, but also introduces different ideas from different cultures.
