Depends on Where You Live – Housing varies widely depending on where you live. The newest hall, Traditions, is the best, but since it's apartment-style it's mostly reserved for juniors and seniors. Landis is also fantastic- lots of space, a great view of the campus "park", beautiful interior design, great amenities. However Landis is reserved for those in the Honors program, and you usually have to be freshman to have priority. Wildwood and McCollum are also great. DO NOT get into Sally or Kellum, they are TERRIBLE!

Good School – FSU is generally a good school. It has rigorous academic programs and top-notch research programs for medicine and psychology. The professors are generally great at their job, and most of them are approachable and friendly. However, FSU has plenty binge drinking and sexual promiscuity. I've heard stories of hazing and personal attacks/harassment within the Greek community (especially sororities), so if you're looking into joining watch out. There's also the crime. My freshman year I saw a guy take off with a girl's laptop in public! Carry pepper spray with you when you're walking on campus at night.

Always Something Going on – FSU is pretty much always having something going on. For instance, every wednesday they have this thing called Market Wednesday where people sit out in front of the student union and just give away free stuff-including food and nice clothing items. If you like sports, I strongly encourage that you take part in the intramural sports teams; from flag football to baseball to rugby, they have it all. A lot of student organizations do things on campus independent of the school as well, such as sidewalk chalk drawing competitions and more. There's also this crazy game that students play called Humans vs. Zombies (abbreviated HvZ) that has too many rules to describe; long story short, it's not uncommon to see random people in bandanas running around campus with fully automatic nerf rifles shooting each other and turning one another into "zombies".. There's always something fun to do at Florida State!

Lab Facilities/Research – I have not yet had the opportunity to engage in an internship program, but I plan to start applying within the next year or so. FSU has excellent advisors under the chemistry major who are more than willing to do anything they can to help you find internships and things of the like so I am not concerned about finding one for me. Internships are a great way to make your application stand out from others' when applying to graduate programs. I am hoping to get an internship in laboratory research here at the university so I can get proper training under my belt before grad school.

Chemistry Major Is Awesome, but Difficult – I love being a chemistry major. It's something I truly have a passion for so attending lectures and studying for very challenging tests aren't even a burden for me. When I first got to Florida State, I did not realize that being a chem major would be so difficult. I slacked off and obliterated my perfect GPA in my very first semester. A year later and a whole lot wiser, I've finally gotten my GPA up and learned that if you're going to commit to a challenging major such as chemistry (or really anything in the math or science field), you must be willing to dedicate yourself to the great deal of work that comes along with it. If I could do it all again, I would only change how hard I worked my first semester; I wish I would have worked harder. As far as my career goals go, I am planning on graduating with a B.A. in either chemistry or biochemistry with a minor in physics. I plan to pursue my master's degree and eventually my doctorate in nucelar chemistry and particle physics/quantum mechanics. I have very few concerns about finding a job; the math and science fields have job opportunities that are steadily on the rise right now.

Very Hot & Rainy – Florida State is located in Florida of course, so naturally it's going to be very hot during the summer and fall and moderately chilly during the winter and spring. Be prepared for good amounts of rain in the summer as well. Professors are not sympathetic of excuses due to weather, unfortunately. It's only during a hurricane that professors will even consider cancelling a class.

Helpful Info for Chemistry Major Transfer Students – I began as a freshman chemistry major at FSU. It was not difficult to enter the program seeing as I was virtually able to choose any major offered as an incoming freshman. The advisors for the chemistry program are very helpful and seem to care a great deal about your future; they will almost always go out of their way to make sure you have the most updated and useful information on grades, classes, extracurricular programs, graduate degree programs, and student research opportunities. I am currently a sophomore with about 15 credit hours to go until I am classified as a junior. Overall, I like the chemistry program a lot. It is very challenging, I rarely have any free time, and my GPA often stays around the 2.8-3.2 range, but I have learned the ropes and have found that the only way to succeed in this program is to truly give it your all. 100% dedication is absolutely necessary if you would like to do well at Florida State University as a chemistry major. I would say that the best way to get admitted as a transfer student into the chemistry program at FSU would be to have a good background in math (calculus, specifically) and science; it also wouldn't hurt to have some volunteer work or extracurricular activites under your belt.

Dorms Are Dorms – Dorms are never great. You never know how the roommate situation will work out and its hard to live with some people. Overall, they're ok. The suite style dorms are clean and well taken care of but the community style dorms make me feel sick just walking by them. They need renovation bad.

Everyone Does It – Even if Florida State takes precautions, college students are going to do what they want with whatever they get their hands on. And it is not difficult to find what they want.

Right Time, Right People – Nightlife goes overboard sometimes. There is plenty of underage drinking going on, but no one seems to care. I hang out with a certain crowd of good friends. If I go out, everyone sticks together and takes care of each other but that is not the case for everyone. Be careful and take precautions.

Great Local Restaurants – We have so many local restaurants around campus. There are a lot of different types of food and never a shortage of it! Whether it's dinner or dessert I'm always exciting to go out and eat.

Football, Football, Football – I LOVE FSU football! Our baseball, softball, and basketball teams are also amazing!

Good for Freshman – I lived on campus in Reynold Hall my freshman year at FSU. I loved it! I was close to everything on campus and met so many people. However, the noise and drama finally got to me and I decided that living off campus would be best for me.

Parking garages are very limited. There are long lines to get into the garages. If staying on campus, park it and do not move the car unless it is totally necessary.

Teachers are always available to help, some classes are large but others are smaller and sometimes you can get individual attention.

There's never a dull moment on campus. Something is always happening. The Student Life Cinema and Club Downunder continuously have prescreenings and concerts that keep every week exciting. There's something for everyone.

Search Long and Hard – Off campus housing can be great and affordable. I come from Maryland so it seems dirt cheap.

Health & Safety:
Campus Is SAFE – The campus is really great and safe. My only complaint is just outside of campus can be scary and has a lot of crime.

Great History, Poor Parking. Everything's great but the parking. The exterior of the buildings are far nicer than the interior, however. Overall it's a great campus with a lot of history.

Financial Aid has foundation scholarships but it only offers it once a year. It would be better if it was offered at least twice a year.

A Great Atmosphere – FSU is a great school with great students and staff. It is conveniently located in the city of Tallahassee which has a lot to offer for students. FSU also has a lot of fun, free activities for students to do throughout the week such as free movies and concerts.

Used but Not by Everyone – At any college you're going to find kids who use drugs or drink alcohol, but its not necessary in order to have fun. FSU is definitely strict about on-campus drinking and usage of drugs, especially in some dorm halls.

You're bound to find at least one parking spot on campus, but there is no telling how close or far it will be from your class. Usually, the main campus garage and gym parking lot fill up the fastest. It can be irritating hunting around for a spot, especially when it is on the opposite side of where you need to be on campus.
College Junior 2012-08-11T20:23:53Z
Cheap but Far Food – There aren't discounts at food places for Florida State students, although many of the places that are available for students to eat at aren't too expensive. There are a lot of cheap and quick places around campus for students to eat at, but there aren't many choices directly on campus if you're looking for a quick bite right before class. Everything is a bit of a walk and most dining places are off campus.
College Junior 2012-08-11T02:26:55Z
Buses Are Great – FSU has a really good bus system. The busses go all throughout the campus and come almost every 10 minutes. Sometimes a little longer or a little quicker depending the time of day. They are dependable to take to class without having to worry about being on time. It is also free for any students to take and there are many easy to find bus stops.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
