College Prowler Take

For those who want to participate in sports but aren’t ready to try out at the varsity level, it’s easy to get involved with intramural teams. There is a wide variety of IMs to choose from, and the warm weather allows for year-round competition. IM sports are plentiful and offer a variety of choices for the discerning amateur athlete. The choices run the gamut, from flag football to bowling. All the IM sports are well organized and highly competitive, so make sure you’re serious about the sport you choose, otherwise you may end up on the sidelines.

As for varsity sports at FSU, football is arguably the biggest thing on campus. When fall rolls around, you can feel the excitement in the air. Tickets can be difficult to come by, especially for the big games, but everyone is usually able to attend the games they want. Florida State University prides itself on having one of the most competitive athletic programs in the country. Football dominates the scene, but that doesn’t mean the other sports are ignored. FSU women’s sports are just as competitive as the men’s and also garner national attention, with the softball, soccer, and volleyball teams often in the hunt for a national championship. Even if you aren’t interested in sports, you can’t help but cheer when an FSU team takes the field.

Most everyone loves football. It's a state school. Some people actually applied because of the football team. Intramural sports are a good way to stay in shape and meet people. They are often over-run by the Greek system, but if you can get past that or are in a fraternity/sorority yourself, you shouldn't have a problem.

Even if you aren’t a sports fan, you can’t help but get caught up in the excitement on campus when there’s a big game. Tailgating in the fall is a serious tradition here. I would suggest attending at least one football game. You won’t be disappointed.

Sports are crazy at FSU. We have some of the best teams in the nation. IM sports are easy to get into—there are tournaments between teams made up of people from dorms, frats, sororities, and just groups of friends getting together.

Getting Tickets

It is very easy to get tickets to most sporting events at FSU. All currently enrolled students pay an athletics fee with their tuition, so student tickets are free. For large events like football games, students request their tickets online, and block seating is available. A lottery will be used when student demand for tickets exceed the supply of available tickets, but usually this doesn't happen. For other events, students show their FSU ID to the ticket office located near Doak Campbell Stadium to receive their free ticket to the game.

Did You Know?

In the wake of the NCAA’s 2005 decision not to support most Native American-themed mascots, there arose some uncertainty as to whether FSU could retain its use of the name “Seminoles,” as well as images and symbols representing that name. A council meeting of the Seminole Tribe’s elders in June of 2005, however, affirmed that the Tribe’s relationship with FSU was a constructive one, and that FSU’s traditions and depiction of the Seminole were respectful.
