Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For those who want to participate in sports but aren’t ready to try out at the varsity level, it’s easy to get involved with intramural teams. There is a wide variety of IMs to choose from, and the warm weather allows for year-round competition. IM sports are plentiful and offer a variety of choices for the discerning amateur athlete. The choices run the gamut, from flag football to bowling. All the IM sports are well organized and highly competitive, so make sure you’re serious about the sport you choose, otherwise you may end up on the sidelines.

As for varsity sports at FSU, football is arguably the biggest thing on campus. When fall rolls around, you can feel the excitement in the air. Tickets can be difficult to come by, especially for the big games, but everyone is usually able to attend the games they want. Florida State University prides itself on having one of the most competitive athletic programs in the country. Football dominates the scene, but that doesn’t mean the other sports are ignored. FSU women’s sports are just as competitive as the men’s and also garner national attention, with the softball, soccer, and volleyball teams often in the hunt for a national championship. Even if you aren’t interested in sports, you can’t help but cheer when an FSU team takes the field.

All About Tradition

Florida State is known for their athletics and their alumni, so it only makes sense that we have great facilities and a lot of them are donated by alum. Gamedays for football, basketball, and baseball almost take over the whole campus. Seating for games is extremely easy to attain if you're a student as well. We don't have to pay anything for a home game ticket. We also have huge IM's. They have several tiers so everyone can participate; including men, women, and co-ed teams. They also have different divisions for greek life and other students. They also go on all semester long so if you miss registration for one sport you always have the opportunity to participate in another. Also the facilities and and IM's are all student ran and governed. Recently FSU invested in creating a new sportsplex which resides off campus which is slightly inconvenient but it is huge and houses 21 fields. Also we have the Reservation which is a lake off campus where students can kayak, rock climb, play beach volleyball and more.

Best in the Nation

Our football team, men's baseball team, women's basketball team, women's soccer team and men's basketball team are some of the best in the nation. We have consistently made it to each sports' particular championship tournament, or in football's case, had an incredible season and a good recruitment class.

School Spirit

School spirit is taken to the extreme at Florida State, especially during football season. The homecoming parade actually shuts down part of downtown Tallahassee. Game days are completely nuts. Be prepared to see nothing but garnet and gold everywhere you look. This is especially true when in-state rivals University of Florida or the University of Miami come to town. FSU students take great pride in their school, and it shows.

Getting Tickets

It is very easy to get tickets to most sporting events at FSU. All currently enrolled students pay an athletics fee with their tuition, so student tickets are free. For large events like football games, students request their tickets online, and block seating is available. A lottery will be used when student demand for tickets exceed the supply of available tickets, but usually this doesn't happen. For other events, students show their FSU ID to the ticket office located near Doak Campbell Stadium to receive their free ticket to the game.

Best Place to Take a Walk

San Luis Mission Park, St. Mark’s Trail

Did You Know? In the wake of the NCAA's 2005 decision not to support most Native American-themed mascots, there arose some uncertainty as to whether FSU could retain its use of the name "Seminoles," as well as images and symbols representing that name. A council meeting of the Seminole Tribe's elders in June of 2005, however, affirmed that the Tribe's relationship with FSU was a constructive one, and that FSU's traditions and depiction of the Seminole were respectful.
