College Prowler Take

Most students will complain about on campus dining, but ironically, the restaurants and dining halls are usually busy. The loudest complaints are often from underclassmen who are still adjusting to not having a home-cooked meal every night. Upperclassmen will grumble about the food, because they eat it all the time. They’ll eat it, still, mostly out of convenience. Many of the establishments are open late, which is a plus for night owls and late-night revelers. The meal plans get mixed reviews. Students who are just looking for fuel to get through the day would probably do well with a meal plan due to a few buffet-style dining halls and all-you-can-eat options. For those who just grab a quick bite between classes or are interested in healthy dining, you would be better off venturing off campus or waiting for the next care package from home.

The food scene on campus has been steadily improving over the past several years, offering more choices and better quality than in the past. But still, it is cafeteria food and in no way can compare to the food your mom makes at home. You won’t starve, but you won’t be amazed, either. There are also several vendors who pop up on campus around lunch time who offer the obligatory hot dogs, chips, and soda, which can come in handy if you need a quick bite while hustling to your next class.

There are a couple of cafeterias on campus and a food court. It’s enough, but the selection is not that great—mostly fast food. I also tried the meal plan my first semester here, but I didn’t care for it. I’d rather make food for myself or scrounge off my roommates.

There always seems to be some organization in the Union giving out free food on any given day.

My opinion of the food on campus...

My opinion of the food on campus in the Student Union is that it is overpriced for the quality. It is good for a quick snack on your way through campus, but I would not recommend eating meals there every day.

Some people will tell you that...

Some people will tell you that they hate it, but if you are the sort of person who adjusts easily to foods, you’ll be fine. You just have to realize that while you are in college, you are going to sacrifice some of the scrumptious bliss that life has to offer (like your mom’s awesome home cooking).

There are small snack and coffee stands littered through out campus where you can get lemonade or a quick junk-food fix before class. The food is pretty good; the Trading Post is a good convenience store.

Many students love that the renovated Suwannee Room closely resembles the Great Hall from the Harry Potter movies and novels.
