Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
Florida State appears to strive towards diversity among the student body. Recent statistics show that FSU has seen minority enrollment increase over 30 percent in the last few years. In addition to financial assistance and aid programs for the economically challenged, the school also offers the CARE program to assist students in adjusting to the social and academic atmosphere. FSU also boasts a large number of international students, as well as over 250 student organizations. This broad range of representation will give students the opportunity to meet and hang out with people of a similar background and to intermingle with people from different backgrounds. Also, keep in mind that Florida A&M University, a predominately minority school, is only a few blocks away, which serves to deepen the ethnic and cultural diversity of the area. Most students agree that attending FSU is a great way to broaden your horizons and gain exposure to a variety of people and cultures. Even though it is firmly situated in a conservative, government-oriented town, FSU has a diversity that is competitive with any institute of higher learning. Florida State is a model ethnic melting pot, with the student body being comprised of a large number of African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans. The school also has a number of ethnic-based student associations that offer a wide range of services and support. FSU is also open-minded enough to include a gay, bisexual, and transgendered student organization that not only offers camaraderie in a group setting, but also support for those in need and a proud and outspoken proponent on campus issues.

The ethnicity at FSU is fairly diverse. In fact, my freshman year, our group of friends nicknamed ourselves the ‘United Nations’ because of our broad range of ethnicities. |

The population is mainly white, but there are plenty of other races and cultures represented. Many clubs involve people from varying groups. There is definitely some diversity, but not to a great extent. |

In the four years I’ve been here, I’ve met people from all over the world, so I would argue that the campus is very diverse. Sure, it is predominately white, but I feel that other ethnic groups are well represented here. |

I guess it depends on your viewpoint. Most of my white friends think the campus is diverse, but my African American friends feel that they don’t get much representation. As far as other cultures go, they are around, but there aren’t many. |

I think the school is pretty diverse. I mean, I saw a Buddhist monk the other day walking to class. Besides that, Florida A&M is two blocks away, so there are a mixture of students in town. |
FactsEconomic Status
You’ll hear the usual complaints about “rich kids,” and more than a handful of students drive cars you know they didn’t pay for themselves. However, the economic status of the student body varies, and FSU does a good job of bringing in students from all walks of life.
Gay Pride
While Florida State is in the south, both the FSU and the local community show a high degree of acceptance for alternative lifestyles and people with different types of sexual orientation. There have been no violent crimes against homosexuals in recent history. The University also hosts the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Student Union and SafeZone.
Minority Clubs
There are quite a few organizations on campus that represent minorities and offer them a voice in student affairs. The list of organizations includes the African Student Association, the Chinese Student & Scholar Association, the Cuban American Student Association, and the South Asian Students Association.
Most Common Religions
FSU is mostly Christian, but many other religions are also represented. Many consider Tallahassee to be part of the Bible Belt, and the city plays host to a number of churches.
Political Activity
The most visible political activity on campus, other than student government, is usually activists protesting either real or perceived injustices. In the past, Florida State has had a mass camp-out on Landis Green that lasted over a month.
