Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Like any major university, FSU has an active and thriving Greek scene. Rush week is always a huge event, with an almost endless succession of parties and gatherings that allow potential members the opportunity to learn all there is about the fraternity or sorority they are most interested in. However, Greek organizations tend to have a partying reputation, but many students do not notice all of the volunteer work the Greeks perform—all of the time and effort that goes into these events. For example, the Greek community at FSU has raised and donated over $100,000 and 20,000 service hours to charitable organizations over the past academic year. Despite many of the preconceptions, Greek organizations at FSU set the standard for leadership and community service.

As far as the social scene is concerned, Greek life is not “the” dominant force on campus. Some students enjoy the camaraderie and lifelong friendships they develop through membership in a fraternity or sorority. Greeks throw parties, but so do other organizations. The Greeks do dominate student government and homecoming elections, but that is to be expected, and that is how it is at any major university. The majority of students at FSU do not belong to a fraternity or sorority, and many would agree that their social lives are just as active as any Greek’s.

Greek or Geek

Unfortunately, as a non-greek, I've encountered instances where not being involved in the lifestyle put me in a negative light. There are many bars, clubs, and events that are dominated by Greek life. Whenever a non-Greek shows up, it is easy to feel isolated. On the other hand, there are many things to do without being part of a sorority or fraternity.

I'm Not in It, but Those Who Are Enjoy It.

Greek life is a pretty big deal at FSU, but its not a big deal if youre not Greek. A lot of kids try not to associate with them. They seem to like what they do.

Better Than Nothing

The greek life is a great way to get involved and make friends as opposed to entering college knowing nobody. Highly recommended for students who don't know anyone or don't plan to be a part of any clubs or organizations.
