FSU in a Nutshell

I love FSU so much because of the green and architecture. The buildings are all brick and there are lots of places to study outside when the days are nice. I also like the social scene and the amount of academics and IM sports offered. Also because everyone is so socially and racially different, you get to experience a lot of cultures everyday!

The major I chose is one of the best in the country of it's kind. It bosts a 99% placement rate for students in jobs of their choice upon graduation. In this economy, a 99% chance of having a good job after college is extremely valuable.

Facts

Traditions
  • Fountain Fling: Another demented tradition is skinny dipping in Westcott Fountain. To make it all the more interesting, the school now has a live Web-cam recording the fountain 24 hours a day.
  • Planting of the Spear: Possibly the most famous tradition at FSU is the planting of the spear by Chief Osceola, played by a lucky student. Prior to kickoff, Chief Osceola, riding his horse, Renegade, gallops onto the field and plants a flaming spear at midfield to begin every home game.
  • Sex at the Stadium: One tradition that has become increasingly difficult to pull off is having sex on the 50-yard line at Doak Campbell Stadium. Unfortunately, recent renovations have made it much more secure than it used to be, and the success rate has dropped off dramatically.
  • Sod Cemetery: The sod cemetery began when the first piece of sod was buried in the corner of the Florida State practice field, and a monument was placed to commemorate a road victory against Georgia in 1960. The tradition of planting a piece of sod from a road win stuck and is continued to this day.
Urban Legends
  • It is said that the Pensacola Street Bridge was closed and torn down because head football coach Bobby Bowden didn’t like the fact that people could stand on it and watch the football team practice inside Doak Campbell Stadium.
  • Strozier Library is rumored to be haunted.
  • The school is supposedly built on an ancient Seminole Indian burial ground. Hence the mascot.
