College Prowler Take
Perhaps because Tallahasee is such a friendly town, people tend to take for granted that serious crimes rarely ever happen. Still, the University’s Office of Safety and Security has done everything possible to ensure that the campus is extremely safe. Emergency phones are attached to blue light posts all around campus and the Safety and Security Shuttle allows students who feel either unsafe to walk or are too inebriated to drive from running into trouble. Most female students admit to feeling very safe when they walk across campus late at night, especially because all paths and streets tend to be well lit and clear of huge bushes or trees. All dorms require ID cards to enter, and as a result, many students don’t always feel the need to lock their doors. One of the main problems that occurs on campus is theft, mostly in places like Strozier Library or the Student Life Building, where students often leave their belongings unattended for long periods of time. Safety and Security officers generally do a very good job of tracking down stolen items, and for the most part, students tend not to steal from other students. Even so, Safety and Security encourages students to register their bicycles with the school in case they are stolen and then turn up a week later somewhere in town—as has been known to happen before.

It's always best to follow common safety rules, like don't walk or run alone at night while listening to your iPod, not paying attention to your surroundings. But the campus is pretty secure. There is a blue-light system that has spots all over campus where the police can respond quickly, day or night. Campus security has been rated really highly nationwide.

Crime on campus is not something...
Crime on campus is not something that people here worry about. Things happen, of course, but incidents are generally few and far between. Campus police are a visible presence and appear eager to help. |

There are emergency telephones posted around campus, sort of like those emergency phones you see on the side of the highway. Just pick one up, and you’ll immediately speak to a security dispatcher. |

Coming to a big campus like Florida State, some people might be concerned about taking classes at night. Luckily, FSU offers the security blanket of a personal escort who will walk individuals to their vehicles. |

Another wonderful service FSU...
Another wonderful service FSU provides is the SafeBus. This bus, driven by students, will pick you up from anywhere on campus in order to give you a safe ride home at night. Any student trying to get home does not need to walk alone in the dark. An obvious benefit of the SafeBus is that it provides a safe way home for students that have been drinking and are not in a position to drive. I am confident that the SafeBus has cut down significantly on drunk driving and has prevented an endless amount of potential accidents. |
