College Prowler Take

The FSU Seminole Express bus system is a reliable and safe way to get around campus, with service running on average of every 10–15 minutes. It’s also free, which makes it extremely popular with the student body. StarMetro, Tallahassee’s bus system, also offers free service with a valid student ID. Tallahassee can boast one of the better public transportation systems in the state. City buses are always a reliable way to get around town, and FSU has a regular bus route around campus that is a lifesaver during the heat of summer. There is also a downtown trolley that runs Monday through Friday, and taxis are always an option for those with money burning a hole in their pocket. In a pinch, you can always call a cab to get you around downtown or to one of the shopping malls.

If you’re looking to venture outside the city limits, there are a number of car rental agencies close to campus. The Tallahassee Regional Airport also provides reliable service, but expect to pay more for airfare. Some people forego the local airport, renting a car, instead, and driving to Jacksonville or Atlanta to save a couple hundred dollars. Basically, as long as you aren’t going too far, transportation around campus and the city is convenient and cheap.

The on-campus bus route only runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, which sucks, but it's free, and so is the city bus if you have a student ID. So between the two, you can get pretty much anywhere in Tallahassee. FSU also has buses to south Florida for weekend trips at a great price (about $80 round trip) and is a great alternative to Greyhound.

I think that transportation around campus is good. I don’t go off campus much, but when I do, I usually take a city bus. They have stops at all the important places like the malls, shopping centers, and city hall. I’ve been happy with it.

The roads suck here. It’s like they haven’t been paved in decades. They are also narrow, and there are a lot of one-way streets downtown. I sold my car after my first year and bought a motorcycle. It’s much easier to get parking and to get around town.

There are lots of buses, and I’ve heard those are pretty convenient. I don’t know anyone who has ever used a taxi in this town. I don’t know anyone who could afford it. But it really isn’t a problem because everything is pretty close by the campus. If it’s farther than a five-minute walk, I always bum a ride.

Tallahassee doesn’t have the best road system, and, though I see buses everywhere I turn, I can never seem to find a stop convenient for me. On campus, the buses are really helpful.
