College Prowler Take

Fordham has always maintained an excellent academic reputation in its individual departments, but many students find themselves surprised by the rigid nature of the core curriculum. All students take one math course, one course in the fine arts, course on global studies and American Pluralism, two literature courses, one English comp/rhetoric, two philosophies, two theologies, two history courses, two natural sciences, two social sciences, and a senior values course (whew!). There is also a foreign language requirement that requires students to take a language and continue courses until they have reached an advanced level. Generally, students complete the core in their first two years while honing in on their chosen major.

One of the most popular reasons for undergrads to come to Fordham is the school’s size. The number of students in any given class rarely exceeds 25, making for a comfortable and open environment between classmates and professors. Students are often pleasantly surprised by how personable professors can be, especially once they take advantage of designated office hours. Professors are up-to-date professionals in their own areas of expertise who will usually help you along if you’re willing to ask. Lincoln Center generally attracts a more artistic crowd, with highly respected departments in theater, dance, and visual arts. In terms of academics, however, both Rose Hill and Lincoln Center maintain impressive records.

The teachers here are nice, and the problem tends to be the students. There isn't much motivation here academically or socially. People come for the city, not the academics.

Supposedly Fordham is really competitive, but sometimes, I find that really hard to believe. I’ve had classes where students sit in the back and make fun of the professor or spend the entire class talking about getting drunk. There was a kid who once asked why we needed outside sources on a literary analysis paper. That really shocked me in a college that has such a high academic ranking. The quality of teaching is excellent, but some of your fellow students are just idiots.

Professors are pretty hit-or-miss here. I’ve had some amazing teachers who have gone out of their way to help me, but others who had trouble remembering my name.

Make an effort to get to know your professors. They can seem really intimidating during class, but most are really friendly and open to helping students outside of class. Plus, most are working professionals in their area. They can land you internships or even job connections in the future!
