College Prowler Take
Students at Fordham indignantly agree that campus is safe, but most will passionately criticize Residence Life. Security officers and RAs are tight and, as a result, extremely strict, and most students agree that they are overly strict. In keeping with Catholic morals, guests of the opposite sex are not allowed to stay overnight. Most students find this to be old-fashioned, unjust, and just plain annoying. And as much as students may disagree with the latter enforcement, it could not be changed even if Res Life officials were all as lenient as, say, John Belushi. Perhaps students would not complain as much about campus strictness if they felt they were treated more like adults. The cohabitation policy is insulting in its assumptions about the sexual activities of students (opposite gender equals sexual activity, only men and women have sex, etc.), although with a Catholic foundation, the school can only allow so much.
A prime example of student/RHA relations can be seen in a recent campus survey asking residents’ opinions of smoking on campus. An overwhelming majority approved of it as long as it was still designated by room, but the campus banned smoking on its premises anyway. Students were outraged by the lack of respect shown to their opinions. For all its student grumbling, Fordham remains an institution dedicated to upholding Catholic principles through its residential rulebook.

Ah! Don’t get me started on strictness. I’ll never stop—it makes me angry; very, very angry! And you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry. |

Some Rose Hill RAs are really over-the-top. I don’t get it. Don’t they have better things to do with their nights than bust little parties? |

Rose Hill is strict in letting people in, but that’s okay. I’d rather have a closed campus than see some crazy man roaming Martyr’s Lawn. |

It all depends on your RA. If he or she is cool, they won’t say anything about your tapestries or empty bottles. Just get on good terms with them and don’t flaunt what you’re not supposed to have. |

Yeah, campus is strict, but at least we’re safe. I don’t really want people bringing wild guests in late at night when I’m trying to sleep, nor do I want beer and puke all over the hallways. I like security’s practices. |
