Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Fordham rarely closes for snowstorms.
  • Getting involved is the best way to meet people.
  • How extensive the core curriculum is
  • How to be financially responsible
  • How to cook more than just microwavable food
  • Most professors want to help their students succeed.
Tips to Succeed
  • Always have back-up classes when planning your schedule. Classes fill up quickly and you don't want to be freaking out at 7 a.m. if your first choice closes.
  • Bring a printer and plenty of ink. It's so much more convenient than walking to the library and paying by the page.
  • Check your Fordham email every single day!
  • Don't procrastinate!
  • Explore NYC! It's so close and easy to get to that there's no excuse for not taking full advantage of all the city has to offer.
  • Knock at the core as soon as you can. You don't wanna be the only senior surrounded by freshmen.
  • Take advantage of the small class sizes and get to know your professors! Most of them are friendly and your connections with them can only help you.

Very Dorm Orientated

If you choose fordham make sure you dorm, as a commuter you feel out of the loop and is harder to keep up to date with events going on fordham. Commuters tend to hang out with commuters and people who dorm tend to hang out with people who dorm

Homey Feel

Fordham does not feel like a typical college campus. The students are very interested in volunteering and there are no frats or sororities. The student body is less rowdy/juvenile than other colleges. It is extremely small - your professors definitely know you and the classes are discussion based. You cannot get away with not doing the readings.

I have never waited more than a few hours for an email to be returned from a professor, administrator or dean. Everyone is personable and seems genuinely interested in your success. Profs will go out of their way to help you if you are struggling.

Alcohol and Drugs at Fordham

In the dorms and at parties, drinking and drugs are huge. There is an overall policy reinforcement, but none that I have seen in action yet. There is also a lot of pressure to drink.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Homecoming Tent: The highlight of any senior who is a 21-year-old by the time Homecoming happens. What's better than Fordham allowing you to drink in the center of campus in the middle of the afternoon?
  • Midnight Breakfast: Although it actually happens around 10 p.m., Midnight Breakfast is a special treat around the time of finals, where students can head to the caf for a late-night breakfast buffet. Father McShane himself serves the eggs!
  • The President's Ball: Fordham's annual dance takes place the Friday night of Homecoming weekend. There's free food, and it's an excuse to get all dressed up and dance before going out for the night to celebrate Homecoming.
  • Senior Nights: Fordham hosts monthly theme nights where senior students get dressed up in ridiculous costumes and party in the basement of the McGinley Center while reminiscing about the past four years and forgetting all about how close the real world is.
  • Spring Weekend: Spring Weekend is one of the most highly anticipated events at Fordham. It takes place the weekend before the last week of spring classes and serves as one last round of fun before everyone buckles down for finals. There are small events during the week, a DJ on Friday night, a concert and carnival on Saturday afternoon, a dance on Saturday night, and a comedian on Sunday—and of course free T-shirts thrown to the crowd at the end of every event.
  • USG Winter Ball: Lincoln Center’s annual winter formal
Urban Legends
  • Don't step on the giant Fordham seals on the floor in Keating or the administration building. If you do, you'll fail the semester!
  • Finlay Hall, an upperclassman dorm with lofts in the rooms, used to be the medical school building. Medical students would observe cadaver dissections from the lofts. In recent years, students have reported waking up to the feeling of cold hands around their throats. Some have said they have felt someone touch their big toe at night as if a tag were being put around their toe, and others have reported their sheets being pulled over their heads like when cadavers have sheets over their heads.
  • Keating Hall used to be a hospital, and Finlay Hall was the morgue. There are underground tunnels linking the two buildings together. Students are forbidden from entering the tunnels, which are still in existence today. Every year a tour of the tunnels is offered as a prize for a scavenger hunt that takes place in October.
  • Keating Hall, the main academic building at Rose Hill, is said to be haunted. People have reported feeling as though someone is watching them while sitting in the first floor lobby.
  • Martyrs' Court, a freshman dorm, is home to a young, blonde, female ghost. She usually appears in the bathroom and is often said to be crying.
  • Queen's Court is by far the most haunted dorm on campus. A statue in one of the wings used to continuously move its arm to point up to another part of the building. Every time the statue's arm moved, it was put back into position. Every floor of the area the statue pointed to was checked, and nothing was found. Finally, some curious Jesuits decided to check the attic of that area and found a skull. After that, the statue's arm no longer moved, but the cracks from the movement are still visible. Over the summer of 2003, one of the RAs in Queen's Court thought a friend was playing tricks on him because the mattresses in one of his rooms were always flipped against the walls. He locked the door so no one else could get in, but the mattresses were still getting flipped. The RA claimed that one day he saw a Jesuit coming from the room who told him that everything had been taken care of and that he had exorcised the room. When the RA asked the University about the Jesuit who had helped him, he was told that the man had died many years ago. Later that year, once the residents had moved in, two students got locked inside of that same room. As the fire department started to work on removing the door, it suddenly dropped to the floor, without all of the screws being removed.
  • The bodies of Jesuits lie under the current parking garage. The tombstones were moved across campus in a successful attempt to stop a parkway from being built through campus, but the bodies remained in their original resting places.
Did You Know?
  • Fat Joe filmed the music video for his hit song, "What's Luv?" featuring Ashanti, in Fordham University's gymnasium. Maroon flags and the Fordham "F" are visible in scenes from the video when Fat Joe is walking with his crew, and the Fordham Ram is clearly visible in the basketball scenes.
  • The opening scene from the movie "Adjustment Bureau" was filmed on the steps outside of Keating Hall. Many Fordham students were used to make up the crowd in the scene. Matt Damon's character, Dave Norris, is a Fordham alumnus.
  • A scene from "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" was filmed in Keating Hall. Many Fordham students were used as extras for the scene. Shia LeBouf's character, Jacob Moore, is a Fordham alumnus.
  • Two scenes from "The Exorcist" were filmed at Fordham University: one in Keating Hall and another in Hughes Hall. Reverend William O'Malley, a former theology professor at Fordham University and Fordham Prep, played Father Dyer in the film.
  • U2's "Good Morning America" performance in 2009 took place on the steps of Keating Hall.
