College Prowler Take
Half of the student population of Fordham commutes to school. Students come everywhere, from Long Island to Connecticut, traveling by subway, train, bus, and perhaps the least popular, car. Housing is extremely limited at Fordham, so many students (including all transfers who are not provided dorm space at their acceptance) are forced to find off-campus housing, while others opt for the freedom from the strictness of Residence Housing. Living anywhere in New York should put you close enough to public transportation to get you to Fordham, but commuting in New York City is another story.
There is a lot to consider when you decide to live off-campus in New York City. How much are you willing to spend on an apartment? Do you have a roommate? How long do you want your commute to be? Many students find housing through Craig’s List, a popular, free-to-use Web Site (www.craigslist.org). If you are willing to pay a broker’s fee, your search pool increases. Both Rose Hill and Lincoln Center provide off-campus housing lists, but these can become outdated rather quickly. Start your search well before you plan on moving in. There are plenty of alternate living options that can be just as exciting as residential life. Little Italy is a popular area in the Bronx, while Lincoln Center students live anywhere from Washington Heights, to Astoria, to Park Slope. Research and explore the area before you make any decisions, and always get a second opinion before moving in.

It’s cheaper to live off-campus. Saving all that money for me is worth a half-hour commute. |

After living on campus for three years, I had to get off. I miss being able to nap in between classes and rolling out of bed for early classes, but it’s also really nice not having to sign in my friends and sneak in beer. |

You have to work to find friends at Lincoln Center when you’re commuting. Initially, it’s kind of depressing to go home alone on a train while people around you are going clubbing, but if you join clubs and hang out in the Commuting Student’s Lounge, you can meet people in your situation. |

I got really tired of living on campus, so now I’m just a few blocks away from Rose Hill. Walking home at night can be a pain, but it’s worth it to not have to deal with Res Life. |
