Although all teaching styles may not appeal to all students, most students feel that the quality of education they’re receiving at F&M is very high. They enjoy their classes and appreciate teachers with creative and innovative approaches to the classroom, as well as friendly attitudes toward students outside of the classroom.
Academics are top-notch here at F&M, with steep admission requirements and devoted faculty at the top of their fields. The reputation of the sciences at F&M is stellar at medical schools. Franklin & Marshall-trained chemists, and geoscientists in particular, are in high demand at graduate schools across the country, as are our social scientists in disciplines such as anthropology, economics, and sociology.

I am constantly impressed with the faculty here. I think when a lot of people apply to college, they look for professors at the forefront of their field, but forget to find out whether or not they’re good teachers. I have always had professors here who not only are intelligent, creative, and interesting, but they actually engage the class instead of standing and lecturing for an hour and a half. The faculty also takes an active interest in you as a student here at F&M. Most of my profs know my name before I know theirs! And, they always take the time to talk with you even when their concern, or yours, isn’t necessarily an academic one. |

My teachers have been inspiring. They have enriched my life. Classes have been interesting for the most part, especially when teachers abandon the traditional lecture format and engage us in dialogue, discussion, and use multimedia. |

As for professors that teach courses for my [Spanish] major, I haven’t really enjoyed any of them very much. I find that some of the Spanish teachers tend to be either misleading or even condescending, but despite my dislike for the professors I did enjoy most of the Spanish classes I have taken thus far. The literature we read is actually quite good. |

I have also loved the Jewish history classes I took. Professor D. was by far my favorite professor at F&M, and I’m sad that he left to teach at a different school. He was a really good-hearted teacher who actually really knew the subjects that he was teaching. He was really knowledgeable in Jewish history, which made the class enjoyable because his lectures just seemed to flow well. |

F&M began life as two colleges: Franklin College began with an endowment from Benjamin Franklin, and Marshall College, founded in Mercersburg by first Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. In 1853, the two colleges merged to create Franklin & Marshall.
Franklin College was the first bilingual college in the United States using English and German.

Franklin & Marshall went co-educational in 1969, when the first class with women was admitted.
F&M’s Foundation requirement is a unique system of inter-subjective courses taught by faculty in each department. Courses range from Culture of Chocolate to American in Black and White. Students must take two of these courses during their first four semesters. This system allows students to explore different areas of interest and may help make the decision of what major to choose a bit easier.
Students who apply to medical schools with a GPA of 3.3 or higher have an 85 to 90 percent chance of getting into at least one school within one year following graduation.
Ninety-three percent of the F&M students who apply to top law schools get accepted.
