Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students seem remarkably unaware of the sports scene. And although several teams at F&M have winning seasons, the relatively low profile of varsity sports on campus limits the number of spectators. Teams bend over backwards to boost the number of attendants to their games because students who attend are usually enthusiastic in their support and have fun.

Many F&M students participate in at least one club or intramural sport. However, for those who seek them out, the sports scene thrives. One-third of the guys play a varsity sport, and one-fourth of the women do. The number of intramural players is higher than that. Dips certainly aren’t lumps of inactivity, even if they aren’t the most spirited fans!

Athletic Facilities

We just got new ellipticals and exercise bikes with interactive programs where you can race each other, create an account and track your workout progress, and watch TV/listen to music while you're exercising. The facilities are really nice and are always open. The pool is also really nice and is always available as long as the swim team isn't practicing. It's in a very convenient location and I think it's run very well.

We've Got Spirit!

The amount of school spirit here is ridiculous! Everyone loves going to watch whatever team is playing that day. Both our basketball teams are currently undefeated. The men's basketball coach is the winningest coach in our division, and 11th winningest amongst the NCAA. There's also a number of club sports to participate in if you want to try something new, or just can't commit the time to a varsity team.

Go, Fight, Win!

The students are very supportive of F&M sports. Students are usually lined up in the food section of a tailgate or socializing whenever there are home football games. The athletic facilities are available for everyone, even people who are not on the athletic teams which is cool because it still gives students the opportunity to work out, exercise, or try out a sport they may be interested in. Unfortunately, there are no pep rallies but I guess the tailgates can make up for them.

Most Overlooked Teams

The women's sports teams have been largely overlooked in the past, but after the women's lacrosse team won the NCAA Division III Championship, female teams have been back on the radar. Look out for women's soccer and basketball.

School Spirit

Students kick off their years here with Orientation. Their OAs (Orientation Advisors: one or two per hall) and RAs (one per hall) try to instill hall spirit right away. By the Pajama Parade, most first-years are chanting their hall with the best of them, and that loyalty typically lasts for the duration. Dips also get rallied for basketball games, but few other sports. Rugby games are always good for a few screams, and of course we rally around the winning teams (of which there’s usually at least one a season). But don’t expect a frenzy like at a state school—Dips are still more concerned for their studies than for sports teams. Of course, we’ll wear F&M gear until the cows come home (never an idle threat in Amish country), and that’s good enough for most of us.

Getting Tickets

Tickets? What tickets? Just show up! F&M fans will gladly make space on the bench for another Diplomat enthusiast.
