College Prowler Take
If you want a life, you’ll have a computer. Instant Messenger is the most popular way for students to communicate, and you will find life to be hard without it. F&M is a fully Mac campus, and the computer store offers freshmen laptops at a decent markdown. Majority of F&M students tote their own computers. The lucky students who are recipients of the Marshall Scholarship receive their computers for free. However, PC owners are out of luck, because no Windows machines are sold or supported by the campus.
The wireless network on campus is fairly decent with strong signals in the most popular gathering places. However, the school does have some file-sharing safeguards in place, so programs like Limewire, Kazaa, and Acquisition are near impossible to use. If you don’t have a computer, both Martin Science library and Shadek-Fackenthal library have labs and computer classrooms. Martin’s is open until 2 a.m., and Shaddy’s until midnight (except on Friday and Saturday nights, when they each close two hours earlier). They’re frequently crowded. During midterm and finals time, you should probably hire thugs to help you get a spot.

The computer labs can get crowded, but most students have their own laptop. It is a Mac campus, so there are no PCs anywhere, but the Macs are very up-to-date. Wi-Fi makes using individual computer really easy.

Unless it is midterms or finals time, computer labs usually have an open spot. Most people bring their own laptops. There is wireless Internet all across campus, which makes it easy to access whatever you need at any given time.

The computer network is great....
The computer network is great. It’s fast, easy, and convenient. The computer labs are generally not that crowded. They only get crowded around midterms and finals, otherwise, you can almost always find a computer to use. I would still bring my own computer because, personally it’s just easier that way. It’s nice to be able to have a computer to use whenever I want and also for whatever I want. |
