Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A number of new student buildings have popped up over the last decade, and students love the new spaces. The Barshinger Life Sciences & Philosophy building (LSP) is one example of the rapid expansion of F&M. Expect to see construction nearly constantly, but then again, that means that students will have new buildings pop up around them each year.

Several of the new buildings provide great resources for students. The Barnes and Noble bookstore inside the renovated Distler house includes a coffee shop. The Writers’ house, a two-story building with the feel of a home is ample space for Writing Center tutors, a reading room, performance space, and two seminar rooms. LSP boasts a magnificent three-story entrance, as well as a primate laboratory unusual for a school of this size. And of course, there is the gorgeous Roschel Performing Arts Center.

Dining at F&M

The dining service at F&M would be fantastic except for one thing: the hours. There are many hours of the day that the dining hall is not open and the secondary dining options: Salsa Rico and Slice of Life do not provide wide enough selection for everyday consumption. Additionally the hours that the dining hall is open for dinner make getting a good meal as an athlete difficult as everything is rushed and often there isn't very much food left.

Awesome Campus and Facilites

The campus at F&M is AWESOME. There's a lot of green space and adirondak chairs on all the lawns. There are two libraries that are both open really late for studying. Dorms are overall good; the rooms in some dorms are really big, and some are smaller, but they're still big compared to dorms at most schools. Most academic buildings are very modern and nice.

Facilities

We have a great athletic center, the ASFC which boasts a fairly new pool and has indoor basketball/tennis courts, a track, and a gym. The gym could be bigger and gets very busy especially around 3-5, but it has a fair amount of equipment. There are two libraries, one is much bigger than the other and a lot of the students go there to study. There are always things going on around campus which are easily advertised in either emails, posters, on sidewalks and in the college center. The campus is friendly, but during the week most students are on their "grind".

Favorite Things To Do

It is nearly impossible to be bored at F&M. Students sometimes complain that there is nothing to do on campus, but that is because they aren’t looking hard enough. Whether you want to see a show or concert at Roschel, or shoot some pool at Ben’s Underground, there is always something for everyone. The F&M College Calendar is constantly being updated to provide students with the latest activities around campus, and on any given weekend it is possible to participate in a variety of activities ranging from watching a sports game, hitting a frat party, or hearing an a cappella concert.

The Spring Arts Festival is a huge student favorite. For a weekend in April, dozens of bands are invited to play on the Green and Quad, student artwork is displayed, and cultural events proliferate, as does drinking! You couldn’t do everything if you stayed for eight Spring Arts Weekends. And of course, you can’t ever have too much of a good thing, and people are agitating for a Fall Arts Weekend! This is besides the huge concert each semester. Past bands have included Live, O.A.R., Talib Kweli and Plain White T’s. For more day-to-day excitement, students stir up debates in the weekly College Reporter and bimonthly College Dispatch, or work on the award-winning yearbook, the Oriflamme. Dancers have plenty of scope with the Dance Club, Dance Team, Ballroom Dancing Club, and a number of courses and master classes each semester. Want a radio show? The F&M radio station is award-winning as well and can be heard in many students' rooms, as well as in the dining hall.
