Fraternities and sororities have been re-recognized by President Fry’s administration, following 16 years of official “de-recognition.” The greater faculty and administration involvement in Greek life is expected to minimize the risks and pitfalls of the Greek experience, such as hazing, poor grades, and alcohol abuse. They also want to strengthen the bonds between F&M and its Greek students, as well as alumni.
Although not mandatory for a good time, Greek life is predominate at F&M. The heavily publicized frat parties are well-attended, and drunken guys and scantily-clad girls can be seen nearly every night lurking near lettered houses. More than a third of men choose to pledge, and a fourth of women do as well. While they rave about their social experiences, reports of hazing, alcohol abuse, and other dangers of Greek life are as prevalent here as at any Greek Row.

Prevalent but Not Necessary
Many students are involved in Greek life, but it is not required. Most of the parties are at the frat houses and non-greek students can attend.

Depends on Your Gender
Being in a fraternity is almost essential for guys. Because there are fewer sororities, it seems that girls feel less pressure to join.
