Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Over the past couple years, the Department of Public Safety has more than doubled, which has helped the F&M community. The officers receive more mixed reviews, but their role is growing in campus life. F&M is near a not so good neighborhood where muggings have been known to occur, although the rise of public safety officers has dramatically curtailed this risk. The college has recently introduced a shuttle services to further ensure the safety of students traveling around campus at night. There has also been the addition of a voluntary text message notification system that would allow public safety to get in touch with all F&M students in the case of an emergency.

Appel Health Services has been working toward becoming more accessible to students and has added new weekend hours from Friday 9 p.m. until Saturday 7 a.m. and Saturday 9 p.m. until Sunday 7 a.m. Appel also maintains a 24-hour Sexual Assault Response Team and close ties to Counseling Services.

Safe Campus

Franklin and Marshall is safe on campus. But if you go into the city of Lancaster, there will be crime (its a city expect it). Students generally do not feel unsafe. If they do they can press the blue lights arranged around campus to call public safety.

Feels Safe on Campus

I've never felt unsafe on campus. There have been some recent armed robberies of students around the borders of the campus, but Public Safety increased its presence after these incidents and there haven't been any issues since.

Safety

Overall safety on campus is good-- but once you get more downtown it's a little sketchy. Its good to always have a friend or two with you, especially at night. We do get emails regarding thefts, assault, etc., but it is not often enough to be worried.
