College Prowler Take

Connections are everything when it comes to finding a party. First-years tend to be restricted to fraternity and team parties. But as they find their niche and friends, they grow to be a part of the party community. After their first year, guys must belong to a fraternity or have a friend in one, in order to attend fraternity parties; many choose to do so, as the drinks are free.

There is also a solid core of non-partiers. For while many F&M students work hard and play harder, there are a few that choose to work hard—and then work harder.

I like going to the frats more in the fall semester—it’s more crowded. I’d rather go to private parties after freshman year, though.

The parties are a lot of fun. This school tends to have a work hard, play harder mentality. As for bars, we’ll pretend that at 18, I wouldn’t know.

There are parties on campus? Are those allowed—haha. I don’t really go to any college-sponsored parties, but the frat parties are great. I know I always have a great time going to those. Also house parties are always fun. The party life at F&M is great—it always seems that someone is throwing a party somewhere. As for bars, I don’t know about that because I am not 21 yet. And as for clubs, I haven’t heard of any good ones, and I don’t think that many people go clubbing, or at least many people that I know.

Parties are fun; there is generally every type (small, big, loud, quiet, crazy, intellectual). They also happen on the weekends and the weekdays. Really, there is something for everyone, every night of the week. The parties are in the frat houses, dorms (shhh . . . don’t tell Public Safety), the special interest houses, and off-campus apartments. The bars are okay. The best part about them is that they are within walking distance of campus.

Parties off campus, if you’re under 21 and a freshman, are usually frat parties. Pretty much everything you’ve heard about those are true. Do not fear, non-frat-type partiers! As you make friends, including upperclassmen, you will find there are more fun parties in apartments.

Facts

Organization Parties

The International Club is known to throw some awesome parties, even though they are dry. Throughout the year, events such as the Black and Gold Party and You Stay Classy F&M provide fun for students of all ages. Some frats are also known to throw some amazing parties in which they transform their whole houses into magically themed fun.

Lancaster is kind of hurting for good clubs, so the Chameleon is about as good as it gets. Nightclubbing isn’t really F&M students’ style for a party. You have to pay a cover and for all your drinks, you have to rub elbows with sketchy townies, and you have to walk significantly longer in the dark, not-so-good parts of town than if you were going to the frats or a house party. But, if you’re really craving that beat, the Chameleon is where to go. They have a lot of really great live acts like Reel Big Fish, Less than Jake, the Pixies, Modest Mouse, and Weezer have been known to play there, as well as great local bands like School of Athens, the Mint, Ennui, and Lovedrug for no cover.

With a light-up dance floor and drink specials during the week, The Village has quickly become a hot spot for F&M upperclassmen. It claims to be Lancaster's largest dance club, and although it may not boast the class of a bash on the beaches of Miami, it provides a good time full of dancing and drinking.

A small bar downtown, this is the major local gay hotspot. The close-knit group of mostly men is remarkably friendly, and the ‘Ho’s karaoke Tuesdays must be heard to be believed.

Brendee’s is a student favorite, with darts in the hopping back room and relatively cheap drinks. Brendee’s is typically well-lit for a dive of its genre, but that only means that you can see the locals hitting on you all the more clearly. Brendee’s is the site of a number of senior class gatherings, as the pitcher specials are a marvel here.

Hildy's is a staple among Franklin and Marshall students. Only a few blocks from campus, this dive bar is hopping with a mix of students and locals. This place is a must for anyone who wants to have a good time, and some students claim to come here to drink with their professor's senior year.

What to Do if You're Not 21

The Chameleon Club usually admits 18 and over, and the ID checks at frat parties are only for show. You can get in anywhere except the bars. And even then, some places let you in—but I’ll let you discover where—it’s more fun that way.
