College Prowler Take
Over the past couple years, the Department of Public Safety has more than doubled, which has helped the F&M community. The officers receive more mixed reviews, but their role is growing in campus life. F&M is near a not so good neighborhood where muggings have been known to occur, although the rise of public safety officers has dramatically curtailed this risk. The college has recently introduced a shuttle services to further ensure the safety of students traveling around campus at night. There has also been the addition of a voluntary text message notification system that would allow public safety to get in touch with all F&M students in the case of an emergency. Appel Health Services has been working toward becoming more accessible to students and has added new weekend hours from Friday 9 p.m. until Saturday 7 a.m. and Saturday 9 p.m. until Sunday 7 a.m. Appel also maintains a 24-hour Sexual Assault Response Team and close ties to Counseling Services.

F&M is in the middle of a city. Unfortunately, there is a bit of crime. The crime that does occur usually is muggings and car break-ins. The security surrounding campus has increased to make it a safer environment, but that doesn't stop the crime completely.

There has been some crime in the past, but the school has increased the security immensely. There is security patrolling the streets on foot and bike, and the shuttle enables student to ride instead of walk at night.

You don't really feel unsafe on the campus. The Amnesty policy is used, which is good and bad. At orientation the police give out bottle openers with their numbers on it. If you don't drink, don't come here.

Security and safety on campus is...
Security and safety on campus is quite good, I think. It has improved a lot over the years, or so I am told. But when I’m on campus and have to walk from building to building alone at night, I feel safe. You always see security walking around campus, or even riding bikes down the nearby streets that some students live on. Plus, the campus security car is constantly circling the roads around campus. So overall, I feel pretty safe. I’ve never personally had a problem, and hope that it stays that way. |
Did You Know?After-hours medical care is available at the Lancaster Regional Medical Center emergency room, only two blocks from campus.
