Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Furman students are generally crazy about their school. Although it’s not for everyone, the ones who decide to attend usually find it a great match. The academic programs at Furman are a huge draw. Students appreciate the quality of education they are getting and the personal attention they get from their professors. And although the workload can be stressful at times, Furman’s idyllic campus makes it difficult to sustain any level of stress for too long.

It’s true the Furman bubble may seem out of touch with the real world at times. Sometimes, it seems like you are surrounded by homecoming queens, class presidents, and valedictorians. But despite a few complaints, no one seems to want to leave. Just ask anyone on campus. Furman students love to talk about why they love their school.

Drunk Bus and Greek Parties

Wonderful thing about Furman is they know we are college students. They have shuttles going to and from pretty much every part (on or off campus). They prefer this than students driving drunk. In downtown Greenville, there are plenty of bars and clubs, however we have nothing on bigger cities. Only down side is all the parties are Greek, however non-greeks may attend Greek parties, which as an independent is nice. Most parties consist of your typical drinking, beer pong, dancing, chilling, and those of us who are southern shag. (I mean the dance.) If that is not your scene or you don't want to leave campus there is a party in the apartments almost every night, so no worries.

Diversity at Furman University

Diversity

Furman gets a bad rap for diversity. Yes, as a southern private college, diversity will be limited, however if you step outside of your little group of friends you can find it everywhere. There is a significant number of Asian cultures represented as well as Greek, Russian, and African American. Not as many hispanics though. Furman is also more politically divided that some might think. Yet again, look past some of the obnoxious Republican signs up and you will see moderate groups and even liberals (we have Young Democrats, and are very active). Economically Furman is not that diverse except the scholarship kids, but you have a lot of scholarship kids, but don't expect people not to be wearing designer clothes. Biggest pro for Furman on diversity though, is in sexuality. Tons of gay, straight, bi, and even some transgender. No one seems to have a problem. It is a very live and let others live their lives mentality.

Asian Studies and Spanish Double Major

The language departments are wonderful. You will never have a non native speaker as a professor and they integrate real world conversational skills into class rather than all that by the book stuff that will get you laughed at living in country. Studying abroad is a must and most of the time, they will get you an internship while you are abroad too. The work load is honestly, however much time you spend in class per week, double it and that is the work load, homework and studying included. As a language major, it is heavy on the speaking and class participation, not so much on tests (more quizzes and writing assignments). The facilities are nice. All the classes are in the same academic building which is nice. They also have lounges where students of that major may study, talk with professors, and get coffee or (tea-cha for the Asian studies department).
