Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Furman prides itself on the high level of personal attention each student receives from his or her professors. Many choose to work at Furman over larger, more research-oriented schools because of their strong commitment to teaching undergraduates. While professors are required to hold office hours everyday, most are available whenever students decide to drop by to discuss a project or just to chat. It is not unusual for professors to invite the class over for dinner or out to a downtown bar to celebrate the end of a term. The only downside to attending a school with such attentive professors is that those classes where you only show up for the final don’t really exist at Furman. Professors know when you are there and expect you to be ready to participate in class discussion.

Furman has an excellent academic reputation in the Southeast, and its national prestige continues to grow. The academics are one of the primary reasons most students decide to attend Furman. While every professor may not be your favorite, nearly all of them are extremely dedicated to teaching. This consistent quality of educators makes for a broad base of strong academic departments in every field of study.

Asian Studies and Spanish Double Major

The language departments are wonderful. You will never have a non native speaker as a professor and they integrate real world conversational skills into class rather than all that by the book stuff that will get you laughed at living in country. Studying abroad is a must and most of the time, they will get you an internship while you are abroad too. The work load is honestly, however much time you spend in class per week, double it and that is the work load, homework and studying included. As a language major, it is heavy on the speaking and class participation, not so much on tests (more quizzes and writing assignments). The facilities are nice. All the classes are in the same academic building which is nice. They also have lounges where students of that major may study, talk with professors, and get coffee or (tea-cha for the Asian studies department).

Tough but fun

I will say, it is tough. There is really not a good place to hide at times. However, it has made me really focus on things I have trouble with. The libraries are open late (I should know, I work at one). The people are kind and caring, for the most part. We can get free tutoring for 2 hours a week per subject. Even then, classes can be difficult. I've been able to keep my scholarships though!

Working hard

I work a lot harder at Furman than I did in high school, and a lot harder than I expected to, honestly. My hard work is definitely rewarded though, and I feel like I'm really getting a good education here.
