Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Furman prides itself on the high level of personal attention each student receives from his or her professors. Many choose to work at Furman over larger, more research-oriented schools because of their strong commitment to teaching undergraduates. While professors are required to hold office hours everyday, most are available whenever students decide to drop by to discuss a project or just to chat. It is not unusual for professors to invite the class over for dinner or out to a downtown bar to celebrate the end of a term. The only downside to attending a school with such attentive professors is that those classes where you only show up for the final don’t really exist at Furman. Professors know when you are there and expect you to be ready to participate in class discussion.

Furman has an excellent academic reputation in the Southeast, and its national prestige continues to grow. The academics are one of the primary reasons most students decide to attend Furman. While every professor may not be your favorite, nearly all of them are extremely dedicated to teaching. This consistent quality of educators makes for a broad base of strong academic departments in every field of study.

Demanding, but Worth It

Furman University is a hugely rigorous school. It is fair to say that whatever high school you went for did not prepare you for this amount of work. However, most of the professors are helpful, and offer reasonable office hours if you need outside help. Also, tutors are provided for free if you need one.

Communications

My major is communication studies, but what I want to eventually do is direct films. Although communications focuses largely on journalism and broadcasting, the professors supply equipment and knowledge that helps with the film process in a huge way.
