College Prowler Take

All freshmen and sophomores live in the dorms, and most students feel that this is a valuable part of connecting with other students. There are few complaints about Furman’s dorms, although most students agree that Blackwell is the worst residence hall. South housing is popular for its large rooms, convenience to the University Center, and social atmosphere. But many are attracted to Lakeside’s view of the lake and suite bathrooms. While many cringe at the community bathrooms, others are glad to live in a place where the bathroom is professionally cleaned everyday, and they force freshmen to interact with their hallmates.

Each freshman hall has a theme, and halls compete against each other fiercely during orientation week. Many freshmen form social groups from their hall and brother/sister halls which last all four years. RAs and freshman advisors, or Frads, are dedicated to adapting their hall to college life. The social atmosphere of dorm life seems to overshadow most shortcomings of the dorms themselves. However, some are furnished with outdated and decrepit furniture, and the mattresses leave much to be desired. Recently, some freshmen have been forced to turn double rooms into triples due to a housing shortage. Still, some students find it hard to leave the dorms after two years.

None of the dorms are really that bad. The second smallest dorms are Gambrell and Chiles, where I lived (and loved). The beds don’t have to be bunked, but they are the smallest dorms behind Blackwell.

Most of the dorms are nice, except Blackwell, which is a step up from tenement housing since the rooms are so small.

If you’re looking for space,...

If you’re looking for space, definitely go with South housing dorms. Lakeside dorms are nice and are all connected, which makes it very ‘homey’ and keeps you out of the rain and cold longer. Also, I would go for dorms with community bathrooms so you don’t have to clean, buy toilet paper, or fight with three other people for space. And with community baths, you really never have to wait for showers.

The dorms are fine—not outstanding, but not bad, either. Guys would probably prefer to live in South housing (It’s closer to the gym and to the athletic fields—and so would girls who like those boys. Lakeside housing is good for those who’d like to focus a little more on their studies, especially freshman year. Stay away from Blackwell because the rooms are tiny! Poteat and McGlothlin, both in South housing, are good choices.

South housing is better than Lakeside. Avoid Blackwell. Overall, they are nice dorms, and much bigger than my friends’ at state schools.
