College Prowler Take
Most students bring their own computers to campus and use the labs only secondarily. The labs usually have several computers available except during the end of each term. Computer access is an important part of Furman life for communication, research, and entertainment. Many professors use Moodle to post class assignments and discussions, which students are expected to check frequently. E-mail is also an important resource for professors to notify their students of announcements. Crowded labs and a slow network are frustrating at times, but these conditions are not the norm. The department of computing and information services does its best to serve the needs of students. There is at least one computer lab in every academic building, as well as computers in the student center, North Village apartments, and in the library. In addition, Furman recently began providing wireless Internet access throughout of the campus. Sometimes, the network is slow or spotty, and this can be frustrating for the majority of students who rely heavily on computers throughout their day. The computers in the labs are not always the newest and the latest, but the equipment provided is sufficient for most students.

Decent Access to Comps Wireless-Not So Good
B+
Computers are generally available, prime time is early night. There are a lot of computers in the library, and some scattered about so there are a lot of options for public computers and printers. Personal printers are convenient but definitely not necessary. The network speed and reliability is lacking. Dorms here generally aren't wireless so that is somewhat of a burden, most everywhere else on campus wireless is available, sometimes tempermental.

Although I learned after some computer trouble that it is possible to survive at Furman without a computer, I would definitely recommend bringing one of your own! The network is pretty good, although it does get crowded and have some problems sometimes. If students are having problems with the network in their dorm rooms, they can usually still access it in a computer lab. |

Having your own computer is not...
Having your own computer is not necessary for convenience sake. The network is relatively fast (T-1 connection, at least), but there are frequent times when the Internet connection is spotty. |

I would bring your own computer...
I would bring your own computer for the sake of having the option to work in your room—And you have to be signed onto AIM at all times, of course! A printer is not a must, though. There are tons of labs to print for free. |

Definitely bring your own...
Definitely bring your own computer! You’ll want it around for IM and e-mail. The computer labs are great places to do projects and papers because you don’t have the distractions you would in your dorm or apartment. Most of the time, it’s easy to find a computer, except during end of the term crunch time. |
