College Prowler Take

Clearly the numbers speak for themselves. Furman is not
a diverse place. The administration would desperately like to attract a more diverse student body, and hopefully this will happen in the future. It is true that Furman is more diverse than it used to be, but the student population is still about 90 pecent white. Of course, many of these students come from various geographical and ideological backgrounds, but whatever diversity Furman has is difficult to see just by looking.

Although Furman’s professors are dedicated to educating their students on the diverse world beyond Furman, they are immersed in a homogeneous environment. Students would be glad to add more diversity to the student body, but upper-middle-class white kids just keep showing up.

The campus has people from many different states and countries, and it hosts a variety of different interests, religions, and opinions. Overall, though, I would have to say that it isn’t as diverse as most places, and that it leans a lot more toward the conservative side. No matter what your interest or belief, though, there will always be somewhere you will fit in.

There’s very little diversity overall. A good bit of the student body is very conservative and WASP-y, and some don’t have a lot of tolerance for people who are different, especially people of different religions.

I think Furman could definitely use more diversity and intermixing. There are, however, groups on campus for everyone. There are several religious groups of different types, as well as multicultural groups.

Facts

Economic Status

True to its country-club atmosphere, most students are upper-middle-class. Although many students help pay for their education through financial aid, most seem to easily support their country-club lifestyles.

Gay Pride

Furman's (openly) gay community is small; however there are organizations such as FLAG (Friends of Lesbians and Gays) whose presence on campus is remarkably visible.

Minority Clubs

Furman has several minority organizations on campus, especially considering its small percentage of minorities. They achieve a fairly visible role on campus by sponsoring various events and parties, and members don't have to be minority or international students.

Most Common Religions

Most religious groups on campus are some variation of Christianity.

Political Activity

Although Furman has a reputation for having an extremely conservative student body, there is actually a healthy amount of ideological diversity. Many are outspoken about their political views, while a good portion seems to remain politically apathetic.
