Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As it turns out, the squeaky clean image that Furman students project is more than just an image. Drugs are a difficult thing to find on Furman’s campus. Many students say they know of one or two people who use drugs, but a large majority have never even seen an illegal substance on Furman’s property. Although there are drugs around, their users are hardly numerous enough to have an actual “drug scene.”

Use among Furman students is also much quieter than at most colleges, because it is not a socially-accepted norm. Those who do use illegal drugs are a social irregularity at Furman. Most students are too involved in campus
activities or school work to even think about using drugs. Although there may be more drug use than some students think, there is hardly any impact on Furman’s social culture.

Study Drugs Abound.

Adderol, Ritalin, and other "study drugs" are EVERYWHERE - I'd say 60-75% of Furman students use them fairly regularly, just to get through the courseload. Drinking is around, and there are lots of frat parties. Expect the campus to have quite a few beer cans after a Friday or Saturday night. Other drugs are there, but very underground - I've seen mostly hallucinogens used by responsible people looking for a "mind-expanding" experience. No "street drugs" like cocaine, heroin, etc ... at all. Marijuana is available, but you have to "know the right people." Fu-Po (Furman Police) seem uninformed about pretty much all substances except alcohol, if you are caught with drugs do expect to hear a lot of "War on Drugs" propaganda.

Lots of Booze

Alcohol is allowed for students 21+ that live in North Village, disallowed everywhere else, though it is not hard to find some. Other drugs are available, though I don't have much experience with them.

It's Alright

Even though our campus is supposed to be dry, I have seen empty beer cans and bottles around campus. I haven't seen drugs on campus though. There isn't much peer pressure on campus to use drugs either.
