College Prowler Take
The Greek scene is a big part of life at Furman whether you are in a Greek organization or not. Most people have been to at least one fraternity party or participated in a Greek-sponsored charity fundraiser. It is difficult to ignore the fraternity and sorority jerseys that students wear to class, and each Greek organization has an unofficially designated table in the Dining Hall. Those who are members are almost always positive about it. People seem to have tons of pride for it,but they don’t let it take over their lives. These students are involved in other student organizations, as well. Girls seem more likely than guys to have friends who don’t wear the same Greek letters, but there are also a large amount of guys who aren’t in a fraternity at all. The biggest effect of Greek life at Furman is the way it fills your social calendar. Sororities have date parties, and fraternities have house parties every weekend. The frats dominate the party scene; if you are into parties, you are usually Greek. The biggest thing missing from the Greek scene at Furman is sorority houses, but sorority members appreciate not having to pay for housing expenses in their dues. Overall, the most social people at Furman are Greek, but there are still lots of other ways to meet people and make friends if Greek organizations are not your thing.

If you want to be part of the Greek scene, that’s great. If you choose not to, however, basically all you are missing is paying extra money and getting to dress up for the formals. |

Greek life definitely dominates the dating scene, but not necessarily one’s social life. There are plenty of other activities, and there are people who have just as much fun and are not Greek. |

I am in a sorority, and yeah, it has played a large role in my life at Furman, but I also live with two other girls from different sororities and an independent. So obviously there is no petty tension between us. All the parties are at the frat houses, but there honestly is not a large ratio of guys in frats. |

I have friends in all the sororities and a lot of independent friends. Your social circles are not dictated by what group you’re a member of. I love my sorority, but I also have friends outside of it. |

Greek life is a bigger part of campus than I had heard it was before I came. The frats/sororities have jersey days at least once a week and pin days, where they dress up, at least once a week, as well. Everyone knows who is in what group, and it is a big part of your identity. I would say that frats heavily influence the social scene. You pick which house you want to go to on Friday and Saturday nights. |
