Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Whether running around the lake or heading to the mall, Furman students work hard to keep up their appearances. But even without all the work, Furman has attractive people. Of course, not everyone here could be on a magazine cover, but there are very few complaints about looks from guys or girls. Everyone seems to admire everyone else’s polished conservative style, but girls are often left wondering why they can’t get a date. Though the boyish Abercrombie look is prevalent on campus, many girls will complain about the high girl-to-guy ratio. Girls seem somewhat bitter about not being able to find their husband at Furman.

Furman does have a reputation for having guys who are more attractive than the girls; however, things seem to be evening out some. There are definitely some nerdy, bookish-type people who are more socially awkward, but the majority of campus is attractive and social. The girls seem to stay in shape so they can fit perfectly into their Banana Republic chinos, and the guys have a conservative frat look.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuper Friendly

Everyone is super friendly. The dress is everyday--no certain styles---just a little bit of everything or whatever suits that particular person at the time. Social life with students is great. I love my campus life.

The Girls, the Boys, and the Beautiful

A large number of the boys have the southern frat look from the croakies to the RL to the cackies and the sperry's. Most of the girls, apart from the jocks, get dresses up even for 8:30 classes. Most people are really put together and I felt proud to be part of a student body that cared about their appearance.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Furman is a very social place. Students are friendly and extremely involved in campus activities. It's probably hard to find a place where more people say hi or smile at you on the way to class. One of the benefits of going to a small school is that people's social groups seem to be very interconnected. Whenever you meet someone new, chances are one of your friends already knows them. The biggest complaint about the social scene is dating. Students tend to hang out in groups instead of going on one-on-one dates.

Hookups or Relationships?

Many students would say neither. Furman students are notoriously dissatisfied with the dating scene. Contrary to popular belief, however, Furman students do hook up with people and sustain dating relationships with other students. The problem is, there's not much in-between. People tend to be either practically engaged, or only occasionally hooking up with people on the weekends.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Because students at Furman are so involved, they often meet people through campus organizations or other friends. The most common way for freshmen to meet people of the opposite sex is on their freshman brother or sister halls. If you are looking for Greeks, then the frat parties are the place to go. But if you aren't into beer-soaked conversations, then a good way to meet people is by having your friends introduce you to their friends. With such a small student body and campus, there aren't very many strangers at Furman.

Dress Code

Some Furman students seem to be confused about what to wear; they dress up for class and down for parties. Girls are often in head-to-toe Ann Taylor or Banana Republic for class, and their trusty pair of Seven jeans gets them through the weekend parties. Guys seem to always have on the latest from Abercrombie or J. Crew, or the T-shirt from last month's sorority party. Then, there are the outdoorsy ones—girls and guys alike—who carry their Nalgene bottles around like a security blanket and wear Chacos year round. There are, of course, a few rogue trendsetters who stand out from the crowd, but the Furman uniform is pretty easy to spot. Overall, Furman students are the well-groomed, well-dressed, take- home-to-the-parents kinds of kids.
