Cheapest Place to Get a Drink
The Bait Shack
College Prowler Take
Due to Furman’s official status as a dry institution, parties on campus are virtually non-existent. There are a few rebellious students who smuggle beer into crowded dorm rooms. However, the louder parties end prematurely due to intervention by an RA or from lack of sufficient elbow room for chugging. Instead, most students attend parties at off-campus fraternity houses, or they convene in bars downtown. Students have plenty watering holes to choose from within walking distance. For pool and darts, go to Barley’s, and for cheap drinks, go to the Bait Shack. This is the extent of weekend escapades because it’s not a party school, but those looking for a good crowd can usually find it. Students who enjoy the frat scene have little to complain about, but for the rest of the student body, options are limited. If your weekend isn’t complete without a late-night dancing and club-hopping, Furman is not the place to be. Furman students are just not a clubbing type. Many spend Friday and Saturday nights simply going out to eat downtown and hanging out with friends. It’s not that Furman students are dull, they just have to get up for church in the morning!

For the underage crowd, fraternity...
For the underage crowd, fraternity parties make up the bulk of the party scene, and most students are content with the options they have for parties in this scene. Once 21, downtown offers a multitude of bars and clubs. Students especially enjoy Liberty Taproom and going to Greenville Drive (baseball) games during the season. City Tavern, a bar locally called Tassie's which serves frozen drinks spiked with Everclear is another favorite.

There are parties on campus even...
There are parties on campus even though it's a dry campus. You just have to use your brain and don't do anything stupid if you don't want to get caught. The biggest party scene is at the fraternity houses, all of which are relatively close to campus. Downtown is really cute! My biggest beef with it is that everything has to close by 2 a.m., but that seems to be the case in a lot of the south. The best spots downtown are Brown's, a jazz club, Barley's Pizza (almost 100 beers on tap), and Liberty Taproom, which has good drinks but is usually too crowded for comfort. Wild Wings is decent, too.

The parties range from Amazing to complete failures. Figure out what kind you like and the crowd you want, then stick with it. I love the parties at the houses and in 'North Village' (the upperclassmen apartment-style housing). While the campus is currently 'dry,' there are plenty of places to go. If you are a hardcore partier and not so much into the classes, do not come to Furman.

The parties off campus are mainly fraternity parties. They’re pretty much whatever you make of them. A lot of people love them, a lot of people don’t. Because Greenville isn’t much of a college town, the bar scene isn’t what it is at a lot of larger schools. Still, many students enjoy events at the Gathering Spot, the Handlebar, and Leeg’s. |

All parties are housed off campus at the six frat houses. They’re fun freshman year, but they get redundant after four years. |
FactsClub Crawler
Nightlife in Greenville is definitely lacking. No one really goes clubbing. If someone says they are going dancing, it often means line dancing. The only places to go dancing is at bars.
Bar Prowler
There are several good bars in Greenville, especially in the downtown area. Because Greenville isn’t really a college town, none of the bars are filled with college kids every night. But when there is a good crowd of Furman students, the bars can be pretty fun.
Bar Listings
A great place for, well, wings. They also have lots of TVs for watching sports, live bands and nightly drink specials. There is usually a crowd of students hanging out here on weekend nights.
Addy’s is a little more upscale, but it’s an authentic Dutch “brown café.” It is a fun place to have a good conversation, food, and drinks. Check out Addy’s Jazz Festival and drink a good selection of hard-to-find import beers. Addy’s Dutch Café and Restaurant 17 E. Coffee St. (864) 232-2339 www.addys.net
Barley’s Tap Room is a good place for pizza and beer, and they also have a nice upstairs bar with billiards and darts.
Blue Ridge is a common place to see students any night of the week. They brew their own beer, have patio seating, and the food is good—try the Buffalo Burger.
Connolly’s is the closest you will get to an authentic Irish pub around here. Listen to live Irish music, eat great bar food, drink beer, and play darts. Tuesday night trivia contests are popular with Furman students. Connolly’s Irish Pub 24 E. Court St. (864) 467-0300
Located in the renovated Kent Building, East Court Grille has a great atmosphere. The large restaurant is sometimes rented out by fraternities, but even if there isn’t a party going on, it’s a great place to go if you want food with your alcohol. East Court Grille & Spirits 25 E. Court St. (864) 271-2744
The Bait Shack is a local dive frequented by Furman students looking for a cheap drink. On Thursdays, they have all-you-can-eat crab legs. They also have an endless supply of free peanuts! The Bait Shack 109 N. Main St. (864) 241-0826
The Cazbah is a tapas restaurant and wine bar. While not on the typical student’s bar circuit, it’s a great place to start or end an evening. The desserts are excellent, and its proximity to the Peace Center for Performing Arts makes it a perfect end after the show.
The Gathering Spot is located in the middle of downtown Greenville, so it’s a good place for bar hopping. They have live music and fried pickles, making it very crowded all the time. Gathering Spot 103 N. Main St. (864) 271-4972
This is a good place for pool and frozen drinks. They also have a wide variety of sandwiches and happy hour every night.
What to Do if You're Not 21
When you’re underage, your best bet is to go to the frat parties. Or you can skip the alcohol altogether, and just hang out in coffeeshops. Check out the Coffee Underground (864) 298-0494. It has great coffee drinks, desserts, and is a fun place to socialize.
