College Prowler Take

Furman requires that all undergraduate students live on
campus. Because there isn’t enough housing, seniors are
allowed to enter an off-campus housing lottery. The reality is that the on-campus apartments are just about as nice as anything off campus. They each have two baths with either two or four bedrooms, and they are furnished relatively nicely. Most students love the convenience and sense of community they get from living on campus. The only major downside is that even if you are over 21, you are not
allowed to have alcohol on campus. If you are caught with it, you can be written up, fined, and have a letter sent home. Although it is pretty easy to get away with having alcohol, it seems unreasonable that a 21-year-old caught with a bottle of wine will have a note sent home to their parents. The ones who usually get in trouble are only the rowdy, loud drinkers.

Despite the regulations, Furman students usually love campus apartment life. However, only juniors and seniors are allowed to live in the apartments, so you have to wait a few years to get there. Because of the tight housing situation, they run out of room for a few groups of juniors every year. This is a big problem because they have to live on campus and either live in the dorms or with people they don’t know.

Off-campus housing is not allowed...

Off-campus housing is not allowed until a student is a senior, and then they must apply to live off campus and recieve permission. Furman recently purchased an apartment complex within a mile of campus that will soon be open for students to live in. Fraternity houses are also allowed to house senior males. Off-campus housing is definitely worth it because Furman is a dry campus for even those who are of age and it is against the rules to consume or pocess alcohol on campus.

You can't live off campus until...

You can't live off campus until senior year, and even then there's a lottery for it. Furman just bought up the only really close, nice apartment complex, so their rent just doubled and now is going to be used for fourth- and fifth-year seniors and grad students, as well as the community. Overall, off-campus housing is a fail at Furman.

Most juniors and seniors live in four-bedroom apartments. Unfortunately, these apartments are not guaranteed to all upperclassmen. Room selection is done by a random lottery procedure.

I don’t think off-campus housing is worth it, because there are great on-campus housing options. Most people live on campus, so it may be lonely off campus.
