Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Furman requires that all undergraduate students live on
campus. Because there isn’t enough housing, seniors are
allowed to enter an off-campus housing lottery. The reality is that the on-campus apartments are just about as nice as anything off campus. They each have two baths with either two or four bedrooms, and they are furnished relatively nicely. Most students love the convenience and sense of community they get from living on campus. The only major downside is that even if you are over 21, you are not
allowed to have alcohol on campus. If you are caught with it, you can be written up, fined, and have a letter sent home. Although it is pretty easy to get away with having alcohol, it seems unreasonable that a 21-year-old caught with a bottle of wine will have a note sent home to their parents. The ones who usually get in trouble are only the rowdy, loud drinkers.

Despite the regulations, Furman students usually love campus apartment life. However, only juniors and seniors are allowed to live in the apartments, so you have to wait a few years to get there. Because of the tight housing situation, they run out of room for a few groups of juniors every year. This is a big problem because they have to live on campus and either live in the dorms or with people they don’t know.

None

Students are required to live on campus anyway. The only exceptions are to live with your family, if you have a medical excuse, to be with a spouse, or if you have a financial reason. However, I have seen plenty of people denied with a true medical reason.

I gave it a C because the Vinings is a good, Furman-owned option off campus. Only available to seniors though.

Off Campus Not Allowed

Furman Students are required to live on campus all four years, except with the exception of the very few fraternity members who choose to live in their Frat house (which only half of the frats have houses and they are not especially close to campus). Furman seems to be moving away from this however, and recently purchased The Vinings, which is a nice apartment complex, and is practically on campus. Seniors can enter the lottery to try and live there. The vinings is only slightly more expensive than on-campus apartments.
