College Prowler Take
There is no question that Furman’s campus feels extremely safe. About half of the students never lock the doors to their rooms during the day or at night. Security may not be as tight as it is on other college campuses, but that’s because there isn’t really a need. Serious crimes rarely happen on campus, and if a student doesn’t feel safe walking alone at night, they can always call on a Public Safety officer to escort them. Although not necessarily the wisest decision, students often feel that they don’t have to exercise the same safety precautions as they would in the real world. Public Safety maintains a highly visible presence on campus, which contributes to its feeling of safety. And while security is not a concern for most students, officers seem to do a good job of taking precautionary measures. Officers are constantly patrolling the campus and are quick to respond to any calls. Residence halls have additional security by requiring a swipe card or key to get into the building. However, doors are often propped open by students. Although Furman’s campus is gated, and they close the back gate every night, the front gate is always open. But if Furman’s security seems lax in some areas, that is only because there has never been a need for more rigorous safety precautions.

I feel like there is about as much security as there needs to be. There are no metal detectors, and there aren’t cops everywhere, but there are definitely cops around. There are also general precautionary measures such as access cards to enter dorm buildings, as well as individual room keys. I have never felt unsafe. |

On the whole, the campus is pretty secure, and I don’t have a lot of qualms about walking by myself at night. That doesn’t mean incidents don’t happen, but it’s very rare. It’s such a small campus that Public Safety can intervene quickly should something happen. Still, it’s good to exercise common sense about safety. |

FUPO to the rescue! I’ve never felt endangered at Furman. The most common crime is bike theft—and the bike is usually found within a week. |

I dread seeing Public Safety officers, but on the whole, they are friendly. They are rabid about parking tickets, however, and that is very frustrating. |
